The state of NSW hospitals is being defended amid new statistics which reveal dozens have died in Western Sydney hospitals over the past two years because of bungles.

According to internal documents, 49 people have died because of misdiagnosis and operations on wrong body parts.

NSW Premier Morris Iemma has told 2GB’s Chris Smith, that's why an incident management system was set up in 2004.

“It’s so that quality and safety can improve in our hospitals,” he said.

“The first think that is working is that we’re getting staff to report – because in the past we didn’t get these reports.”

That's only in Western Sydney what about the rest of the State? What about the cases that are covered up? While one acknowledges that Hospitals are a State matter where is Mr. know it all Kevin Rudd-he was going to take over the Hospitals if the States didn't get their act together-surely he should be showing some compassion for the unnecessary loss of life. He should keep good his election promise to get Hospitals right under State control or take them over if he can do a better job.. People of NSW wake up-the next statistic could be you.

Harris the man who still thinks Hospitals are wholly state funded. What you should be asking is why Howard cut funding to state hospitals from 48% to 41% under the Liberals. You should also be asking why Howard cut doctors and nursing training places in universities. Why Howard forced compulsory healthcare cover thru tax changes. This all resulted in the pte sector stripping medical professionals from the public sector. It was all about pressuring states and placing Australians in danger.Disgraceful!

Freestone, - You are wrong you idiot. John Howard didn't cut funding to the States, thanks to the GST the incompetent Labor States got more money than they ever had. It is their jobs for the boys mentality and their lack of ability that has led to this crisis. They have more administration and back up staff than they have front line staff. Rudd the Dudd said he had the answers to all these problems-the only answer he has is to falsely blame John Howard. Its people like you that vote for these useless people that should bear responsibility for the mess.

Freestone-Your stupidity knows no bounds. If we didn't have a Private Health system the struggling Public Health system would not only be in a partially collapsed state, as it is now, it would be totally collapsed. You should thank the people that help fund the Private Health System because without them the Public system would be a lot worse.

As if Iemma gives a stuff about deaths or sufferings. He's to busy trying to flog our infrastructure so that he can retire into a cushy "job" just like the former premier.

I stand to be corrected, and Im sure the Professor will, he loves my posts, but isnt it true all states get the 12% GST collected by the Fed Govt.Might be why the State Labor Premiers didnt object to it back in the 90's.Just posing some questions here, where does the massive amount of tobacco tax go each year, to revenue? If so , why doesnt it all go to Health? How about the tax on alcohol, where does that go, revenue? Education and Health have always been State responsibilitys.

As usual you are wrong. The GST IS 10%.The GST agreement with states was a shotgun wedding and NSW govt made objections as did Vic on the split between states. The whole idea was to disadvantage the two biggest states that had the most federal seats. Now there have been various university studies that show the rate of increase in Gst has lagged dramatically behind income tax.Howard has cleverly been strangling the states of the prosperity they were entitled whilst squirelling away big surplusses.

It's time to let those who want an elitist private health care pay for it. Not only that, half of their payment should go straight to the private health service. Also the tax breaks for private health should be removed. If the rich want a seperate health system that's fine, so long as the pay for it. Otherwise get rid of the private system and put all that money into the public system. If politicians and bureaucrats had to use the one system they would look after it.

I don't think people should panic over those statistics. None of the dead were important to the ALP.

I said I stood to be corrected, and you did Prof, LOL, just a test to make sure your still obsessing over me, and you are. Its all called buck passing, Fed , State, to and fro, and while they all procrastinate, people die and even have the wrong body parts operated on. The point is, WHEN is Rudd and the States going to do something about it ? I keep hearing the promises ringing in my ears, and STILL the Public Health Sytem in ALL states is a shambles. While the pollies play people die.
