Labor slips two per cent in post Olympics Newspoll

26/08/2008 8:59:00 AM.  | Gillian Cannon
The past two weeks of Olympic frenzy has pushed politics out of the minds of voters and is being blamed for a slump in the polls for Labor.

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd's overseas trips have taken their toll - his dissatisfaction rating is up three points at 32 percent.

According to the latest Newspoll in the Australian, Mr Rudd has also suffered a blow in the preferred Prime Minister stakes - he's dropped three points to 65 percent, while Opposition Leader Brendan Nelson has gained two.

Meantime, voter support for Labor in the two-party preferred has fallen one percent to 56, the coalition up one point to 44 percent.

It is not the Olympics or the Overseas trips it's the economy stupid. The surprising thing is that Rudd and Labor have maintained such high ratings in the first place. All their promises are for the distant future. It’s all very well to look forward but people have to eat to day and Rudd has neglected the present and near future under the guise of being a visionary. He will not get away with it for much longer.
