Business groups back Iemma's new electricity plan

29/08/2008 10:00:00 AM.  | Kelly Fedor
A plan to push ahead with a partial NSW electricity sell-off without a vote in Parliament has received the backing of business groups.

NSW Premier Morris Iemma announced his new plan after facing an embarrassing defeat in Parliament yesterday, after recalling MPs three weeks early.

David Elliott, from the Civil Contractors Federation, says the changes should help spur private investment in the state and drive-up economic security.

“There was always a need for some sort of commercial attitude towards electricity privatisation, particularly as we’re the only state where it’s a state-run asset," he told LIVENEWS.com.au.

“So I think that this is probably a step in the right direction, the Premier has a strong case to put forward.”

I have worked out Iemma's problem. He has been genetically modified, in fact he is a "genetically modified fool".

Lets not lose sight of the fact it was the big end of towns support that delivered us both the federal and state Labor Governments. It is the big end of town that stands to be the big winners.

Does this clown not realise that most of NSW wants the electricity sector to remain public property. Every major project (with private partnership) the Delema / Carr government has produced in the last 10 years has been a total failure. To the "business groups" who cares what you think, majority rules. As far as no new upgrades, investments, additions to the power grid. Look at Energy Australias website, 8.6 billion dollar projects in total over the next few years.

The Business lobby is a totally disinterested party , not just looking to cream the profits and fees from such a sale right? NO WAY, NO HOW, NO SELLOFF! Sack Iemma & Costa NOW!

Perhaps those staunch Labor voters, as I once was, will begin to realise now that the Labor Party forgot its grass roots 'working families" years ago. They sold out to the big end of town slowly and gradually since Whitlam, and Keating finished the process. They no longer represent "working class", they are now part of the top end, and the PC academia. The party at all levels has so many factions, all predominantly academics. All thats left of workers is the Union faction, and the workers left them.

Susan: You are 100 per cent correct. The labor party is not what it used to be and the morons like Whitlam and Keatingl ruined this country for what it actually stood for i.e. "working class man". (I should be politically correct but to hell with Keating's ideology and to hell with being politically correct! who really cares when the country is going down the gurgler and the academics won't be the ones that will fix it - what academic gets their hands dirty!

Come on guys, don't be too hard on business. They only sense a perfect opportunity to make a handsome risk-free profit on a commercial transaction. After all Bob Carr, Morris Iemma et al have proven time and time again that they are incapable of writing a contract in the interests of the citizens of our state and knowing that you can write a contract with this mob which ensures you wholly secure your upside and have your downside underwritten by the taxpayers wouldn't you too be salivating?
