Police warn of increase in glassing attacks

1/09/2008 5:22:00 PM.  |

A spate of recent glassing attacks has prompted NSW police to issue a warning about the "alcohol-fuelled" assaults.

Two men were injured in separate glassing attacks over the weekend, while NRL star Greg Bird faces assault charges over after an alleged attack on his girlfriend last month.

A 25-year-old man was attacked at a pub in Wolumla, on NSW's south coast, on Saturday, while a 34-year-old man was injured at a club in St Marys, in Sydney's west, earlier that same day.

Both men suffered serious facial lacerations and had to be treated in hospital.

NSW Police Force alcohol-related crime spokesman Superintendent Mark Murdoch said glassing incidents were a growing concern for frontline officers.

"Police in the field are increasingly responding to so-called 'glassings', where people have been left injured after being struck with a glass or bottle," Supt Murdoch said in a statement.

"I have no doubt such violence is alcohol-fuelled and police won't tolerate it.

"Striking someone with a bottle or glass has the potential to cause serious injury or worse.

"Anyone who engages in this type of behaviour can expect to feel the full force of the law."

In the pub attack at Wolumla, the 25-year-old man was attacked after an argument with members of a bucks party.

He was head-butted and had a smashed beer glass pushed into his face, causing severe facial injuries. No one has been charged over the attack.

A 23-year-old man was arrested at a club in St Marys early on Saturday after the 34-year-old man was allegedly struck with a glass while trying to help security guards break up a fight between two groups of men, who had been playing pool.

Australia rugby league international Bird, 24, has been stood down indefinitely by the Cronulla Sharks.

He was charged last week with one count of maliciously inflicting grievous bodily harm after his girlfriend Kate Milligan suffered cuts and a fractured eye socket when she was allegedly hit in the face with a glass.

Ms Milligan was taken to hospital after an incident at Bird's Cronulla apartment, in Sydney's south, on Sunday, August 24.

Bird is due to face court on October 8, at Sydney's Downing Centre.

I was the victim of an unprovoked glassing in 1998. I unfortunately lost the sight in one eye. I am reminded of this icident every day. Each time I hear of another glassing, I know what these poor people a feeling and each time I flashback to that night 10 years ago as though it was yesterday. Governments need to ensure that the laws reflect what the public want. I personally believe that this is as serious as being shot or stabbed with a knife and the punishment should reflect the crime.
