Jamaica's Asafa Powell has run the second fastest time ever in the 100 metres, falling just 0.03 seconds short of Usain Bolt’s world record set at the Beijing Games.

Racing at the track meeting in Lausanne, Switzerland, Powell clocked in at 9.72 seconds to win the event.

Bolt set a new mark with his blistering 9.69sec record, bettering his previous best time – also 9.72sec – set in May this year.
