Nine Australian special forces soldiers have been wounded, one with life-threatening injuries, in an ambush by Taliban forces in Afghanistan.

Defence force chief Angus Houston said it was fortunate that no Australians had been killed in the overnight battle.

"It is a very dangerous place and we were involved in an activity with other forces. I guess we were ambushed and this is what happens," Air Chief Marshal Houston told reporters.

The battle occurred overnight in Oruzgan Province.

Air Chief Marshal Houston said he could not discuss operational details because the mission was continuing.

"We have seen we are getting towards the end of the campaign season as they call it. We are up against a very determined adversary," he said.

"As always, our people are doing a great job and they have been very successful in recent times. Unfortunately, from time to time, we will have casualties."

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, speaking at the Australian War Memorial at a ceremony commemorating the Battle for Australia Day, acknowledged the sacrifice of Australian soldiers, past and present.

"We have had news this morning that Australian forces serving in Afghanistan have been engaged again in heavy fighting against the Taliban," he said.

"This fighting has seen nine Australian troops injured, some seriously. Our thoughts and our prayers are with our troops, with their families and their loved ones."

A defence force statement said one soldier had life-threatening wounds, five had serious wounds and three were slightly wounded.

They were part of an ongoing Special Operations Task Group (SOTG) operation to disrupt Taliban activity at the time.

Defence spokesman Brigadier Brian Dawson said the wounded soldiers were given immediate first aid by members of their patrol and evacuated by helicopter to medical facilities.

An unspecified number of Taliban extremists were killed in the battle.

"All nine soldiers have been evacuated from the area of the contact and are receiving the best possible medical care at present," he said in a statement.

"Our concern remains with the soldiers in the field and ensuring we do not jeopardise them through the release of information that could be exploited by our adversary."

The soldiers' families have been informed.

Defence said further details would be released when the operational situation allowed.

Australia has about 1,000 troops in Afghanistan, including a 300-member special forces group comprising members of the Special Air Service Regiment and the Commando Battalion.

Opposition defence spokesman Nick Minchin said he saluted the soldiers' courage.

"Our thoughts are with these nine wounded Australian soldiers, especially the soldier who has suffered life-threatening wounds. Our thoughts are also with their families at what must be a very distressing time," he said in a statement.

"We wish all of these troops a full and speedy recovery."

Senator Minchin said the increase in activity by the Taliban demonstrated the need for the Coalition in Afghanistan to maintain its resolve and stand up to Taliban extremism.

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has told parliament that the Australian soldiers wounded in Afghanistan have been part of vital mission.

"This action and the toll it has taken on these members of the Australian Defence Force underscores the importance and the dangers of the vital mission they're undertaking on behalf of us all in Afghanistan," Mr Rudd told parliament

"They are engaged in a vital mission. The Taliban can never again be allowed to use Afghanistan as a training ground, a hiding place or a launching pad for terrorist operations around the world.

"It's the men and women of the Australian Defence Force like those who put themselves in harm's way last night that are taking the fight to this enemy of us all."

The prime minister said the troops are also helping Afghanis in Oruzgan in construction, teaching and mentoring.

Opposition Leader Brendan Nelson endorsed Mr Rudd's remarks.

"I join with the prime minister in ensuring that the political will and resolve of this parliament is as firm as it has ever been to see this through and see that we are able to liberate the people of Afghanistan," Dr Nelson told parliament.

Hmmm , no comments here...I should have known there wouldnt be. To busy cowtowing and kissing Mr Patel and the Islamic Councils arses. Typical....Ill wait and se if Mr Patel and his council show any concern for our diggers...or perhaps they are dancing like they did after the twin towers and Bali.

Treason laws really need to be used. If the government had any balls it would make sure the treason law be used and if it needs to be changed and refined so be it, I’m sick to death of the Islamic and non Islamic traitors, (not all are traitors I should say).

Slowe. You are obviously insane. What on God's Earth has this to do with Patel? Your bigotry has fried what little brain you were born with. My sympathies to the soldiers and their families. Get well soon.

I'm waiting for the comments of sympathy over the deaths and injuries to our soldiers, by the muslims who were outraged over the dog cages. And while I'm waiting I'll walk outside and watch the pigs fly overhead.

Well done Diggers, I hope you all recover from your wounds quickly and completely. I for one am absolutely support your work in Afgahnistan and Iraq. Susan, as for the Islamic Council's collective arses, I don't fancy kissing them but would prefer to sink my boot five lace holes deep up them. Maybe that would help open their minds to the fact that they are extremely fortunate to live in Australia and not to insult the rest of the populous with their myopic drivel.

It's sad to see you low life's using these incidents to promote your bigoted and racist views. That's you Bart, and Colleen A and of course Slowe. While the Taliban are as evil as the Americans were at Abu Grahib and G'bay, you should not forget that the USA financed them, armed them, and called them allies for many years. The Afghanistan invasion was supposed to be the hunt for bin Laden. I am no longer sure what it's about, they don't seem to care about bin Laden anymore.

Yup Slowe, You are bonkers, writing to me about not writing to me? You can't explain your reference to Patel without acknowledging your insanity. You have to realise Slowe that until you acknowledge your insanity you can't begin to get better. What has this to do with Patel?

Nope, No sign of Sen.Brown , Still no realisation from anyone in the GUV's Brigade on WHY our FORCES should have their OWN medivac units. A blackhawk for moments like this would be handy too. Do we need our, what, 3 or 4 Blackhawks we own, Here, where its peaceful do we ? Set them up and ship them over, give our lads the support the should have, No harm in lifting their ODDS for coming home. You people in Power sent them, Now get behind them and back them.

mention the word''muslim'' and out come the hate mongers who really despise 'all'' muslims. the taliban are just a useful target for their ill informed comments. they dont mind a war as long as someone else is fighting it .their opinions based primarily on main stream propaganda no research done into the history or dynamics of any situation involving muslims.just blind nationalistic ranting. if you really cared for the troops youd want them home. its all very sad really.

So Crook, what research did YOU do on the Taliban? Afghanistan was a training ground and base of operations for worldwide terrorism, including senior al-Qaida leaders and Osama Bin Laden. The Taliban are known "mates" of the Iraqi Sunnis. The Taliban prohibits the education of females (Crook - do you agree with that?). Women are forbidden from employment. Women were forced to stay in doors. Many women were summarily executed for unproven crimes. Crook, which part of the Taliban do you support?

i dont support the taliban at all . they are primitives and i completely disagree with their views of women etc etc. i dont think they are mates with the sunnis. not that that is against international law. as most sunnis are law abiding decentpeople.the taliban have their own agenda, namely regaining power in afghanistan. the agenda of the sunnis depending on which ones you are talking about, iraqi, palestinian, have theirs. i have researched the subject. hope you found me informative ?

Trevor, who mentioned the word Muslim ? YOU did...most posts here are directed at the Taliban, an extreme fundamentalist group of thugs. Taliban are a Sunni Islamist and Pashtun nationalist movement. You have the "Muslim" hang up Trevor, I have no time for fundamentalists of any kind.....perhaps you should read up on the practices of these thugs Trevor.

Wednesday, 03 September 2008

i have to reiterate i am no lover of fundamentalism of any kind! their practices are abhorrent. but we are and have been supportive of such groups for financial gain . which is even more abhorrent.the comments are directed at the talibanbut its obvious the general target are muslims. perhaps you should read how theses thugs came into power.who trained them and who financed them ? we turned a blind eye to the suffering of the afghans until it came back to bite us. no 'hangups'' here mate.

Trevor I have read up on who supported and trained them..."The Taliban received valuable training, supplies and arms from the Pakistani government, and many recruits from Madrasahs for Afghan refugees in Pakistan, primarily ones established by the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI)"....Pakistan supplies them , trains them, and hides them on its border Trevor.

Susan, I think that is what is known as an own goal. In your haste to deliver a hateful and hysterical screed against the Islamic Council of Australia, you've really exposed yourself as a bit of a goose.

Posted by: darren carrow, brisbane

Friday, 05 September 2008

My own goal wasnt directed at you firstly Darren...secondly, I was explaining a past post to a very insane Henderson...thirdly, WHERE do you get I have made a "hateful and hysterical screed" at the Islamic Council ?? My initial question was...will we see the same concern for these diggers from the Islamic Council as we did for the media hysteria , and incorrect, article on taliban and dog cages.....now clarify your post Darren , you sound too much like Henderson for me . Put up or shutup

Posted by: susan lowe, gippsland

Friday, 05 September 2008

Susan, in your first post you expressed the view that no-one had posted on this story because they were kissing the Islamic Council's asses, while the members of the Council were expressed to be dancing in the streets to express their joy about the dead diggers. Not exaclty a moderate and rational comment, Seek out a dictionary. I think your comments fall well within the meaning of 'hateful' and 'hysterical'. Really, if you're going to leave poisonous posts you must be prepared for a reaction.

The one who really looked like the goose darren was henderson, because he believed I was speaking of Dr Patel, the Qld butcher of women, when in actual fact i was speaking of Iqubal Patel, the President of the Islamic Council of Australia... Only one goose here darren and if i didnt know better id say you know him very very well. LOL..the one from darling downs..you sure your in brisbane darren ? hehehee..still waiting for you to post my "hateful and hysterical screed" ....you crack me up Hendo
