A British policeman has angered onlookers by wearing an Osama bin Laden costume during a London village carnival, just a few days before the seventh 9/11 anniversary.
Chief Superintendent Colin Terry says residents thought he was still away on a mission to Afghanistan to help police there, and so picked out the shabby bearded costume as a gag.
“The carnival is a community event and I am extremely disappointed if it has caused offence and I am most apologetic for that," he told the BBC.
He says two years ago he attended a memorial for the fifth anniversary of the attacks in New York and wanted to try a comedic approach this year.
He’s admitted the move constituted "an error of judgment" on his part.
