‘Keen for a steak’ thousands of US sailors arrive in Sydney

10/10/2008 10:14:00 AM.  | Laura Tunstall
Sydney has put on a glorious display of blue sky for more than 3,000 US sailors and marines who've docked at Garden Island this morning.

The USS Peleliu has docked in Sydney this morning - its last foreign port before the 1,500 sailors and 1,300 marines head home to the United States.

They've been in the Arabian gulf on training exercises - and after five months those on board are itching to get off.

The marines have this morning been briefed on the flight deck and told to remain on their best behaviour during their Sydney visit.

No excessive drinking and no fighting the main message - they've been told to stay with their buddy at all times.

Most of the sailors on board are looking forward to sightseeing - they've already had the best vantage point of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and opera house - others say they're keen for a game of golf and a steak.
