Climate action not on backburner: Wong

14/10/2008 9:42:00 AM.  | AAP
The global financial crisis does not reduce the need to respond to climate change, the federal government says.

Climate Change Minister Penny Wong, in Poland for talks ahead of a key United Nations climate change conference in Copenhagen, says the crisis will be factored into the design of a future emissions trading scheme.

The government was also very aware of the desire of many business leaders for certainty and clarity, she said.

Ministers attending the Poland meeting have discussed the financial crisis.

"The current financial crisis does not lessen the need for the nations of the world to deal with climate change," Senator Wong told ABC Radio on Tuesday.

She was responding to comments from Woodside chief executive Don Voelte who said a carbon trading scheme could not start in 2010, as flagged in the government's green paper.

"Heck, I think it's off the table right now," he told ABC Radio.

"You can't put something like that in at this time until we get this whole fiscal chaos that is going on in the world straightened out."

That would probably take a couple of years, he said.

"No government can risk jobs in the economy until we get stabilisation within the world marketplace.

"This is not going to be a short-term issue, it is not going to be two or three months to get this all straightened out."

But the Australian Industry Group says the scheme should start in 2010.

"The economic pressure certainly intensifies pressure on the economy as a whole if we move too quickly on this issue," chief executive Heather Ridout said.

"At the same time if we start sensibly, if we start cautiously, maybe we can learn how to operate in this new environment and the risks will  be reduced."

Well Kevin went to the UN and nobody was listening so he came back and tried to address economics, a lot of it going on while his Treasure was doing?.....well what has Wayne been up to the last few days? ; and so perhaps with that albino cunningness he has devised some illogical rationale to send his ministers responsible for a portfolio abroad so he can steal their thunder and announce a shift in direction!, so Wong and us might best stay tuned to a change of gears if not direction.

Well Penny (Boy) Wong is still banging her boring drum on CRAP CRAP CRAP. The solution to this is Nuclear like the rest of the world is going. But not these fools in Canberra. They want to waste $1Trillion dollars of tax payers money on stupidity. The rest of the world are just laughing a their stupidity. China is to build 35 reactors and is now a party to a new Nuclear fusion reactor being developed in Europe. And what is Wong and Rudd doing. They are Ostrich farmers.

Wong you are so wrong. The world cannot afford your ill thought out experiment in "saving the planet". In a quiet moment Kev will probably move you to a more important portfolio...Parliamentary Secretary for the Canteen!

While our mining and livestock industries are in full swing, and our immigration numbers are at a historical high, there is no way we in Australia will be able to comply with Kyoto. We have these pollies on high salaries, but noting will be done. Climate change will be used as a means of extracting more taxes and charges, and more people means more income and wealth. While we go for economic growth as we are, greenhouse emissions will continue to rise. Advance Australia Bare!

Exactly Milly. The reason this rubbish was brought up is for TAX. The Countries Govtments over the years have sold OFF all Australian owned(govt.state) Bussiness. Now they realise they have a shortage of cash tumbling into the coffers. I guess the teachings of Milton Friedman didnt cover this part?

Nick and Milly, My goodness you are dumb. What about the GST that was implemented to ensure that such losses where met and bettered. if it was not for the Liberals biting the Bullet on GST we would be a third world country like Zimbabwe now. Where do you think the Muppets in NSW got the $90B they have squandered, and have nothing to show for it except a $5B black hole. The tax payer has done extremely well under the Liberals, when it comes to cash in hand and tax reductions.

Wonder how Wong is finding the EU situation, Italy having announced that meeting emissions reduction target for 2020 is off their countries agenda for now and Poland also considering something of the same, and with Poms, frogs and krauts looking closely at what they can do to separate/save their economies from the US, wong will hopefully be returning with less than a Wong smile whilst what are the odds of Kevin ahead of the pack making an announcement within the week.
