Don't write me off, says struggling McCain

14/10/2008 2:58:00 PM.  | AAP
In a career littered with comebacks, Republican John McCain is now vowing one more Herculean effort to overhaul Barack Obama's commanding poll lead and restore his White House dream.

While the Democratic hopeful for the November 4 election was on Monday rolling out a costly new plan to kick-start the US economy, McCain went back to basics in extolling his own record of heroism and service to a crisis-torn nation.

"I have been written off on so many occasions by political pundits that it's hard for me to count," he told CNN after delivering a retooled stump speech that portrayed Obama as dangerously inexperienced for the challenges at hand.

"I think it is more lives than a cat. But the point is, we are doing fine. I'm happy with where we are. We are fighting the good fight. That's what it is all about. That's what I love," McCain said.

Ahead of Wednesday's third and final presidential debate, the latest clutch of polls suggested McCain's all-out offensive on Obama's character has flopped with the Democrat now sitting on a double-digit lead overall.

The latest iteration of McCain's campaign address, delivered in the suddenly at-risk Republican strongholds of North Carolina and Virginia, dropped some of the more inflammatory attacks on Obama of recent days.

Instead, he said, Obama was being presumptuous in already "measuring the drapes" for the White House.

"But they forgot to let you decide. My friends, we've got them just where we want them," McCain insisted, having already come back once after his campaign for the Republican nomination looked dead and buried in mid-2007.

"I come from a long line of McCains who believed that to love America is to fight for her," the former Vietnam prisoner of war added.

"I have fought for you most of my life. There are other ways to love this country, but I've never been the kind to do it from the sidelines."

Fantastic, it looks as though we will witness intelligence and integrity triumph over stupidity and corruption. Palin was the last nail in McCain's political coffin.

Unfortunately it looks like the US is going to make the same mistake we did last November - vote in a know-nothing, no experience, hot air balloon. And we are all going to be sorrier for it.

happy, either way, the banks will still win. Obama, backed by Goldman Sachs, will do as they tell him, to the tune of $3 mill. McCain, baxcked by Goldman Sachs, will also do as they tell him. Bush, paulson, backed by Goldman Sachs, Are doing exactly what they were told. As did Reagan, Clinton, Bush Snr etc...mate, you need to get into some better info than the crap from the Journo hacks in this land. Try reading info from people WHO know Whats really happening. Then you wont be a HAPPY nut . :)

Yes. All rhetorical rubbish Mr McCain. Your war service is perhaps commendable - but that is no qualification for high level public office. You no doubt gave the presidential campaign your best serve - but in my view, you are not political leadership material. Onepatently clear example of this, is that you picked an absolute "Dud" in 'hockey mom' one Sarah Palin.I understand you are related to her..a no no for political office. She has been the so called 'Governor'. Of what, a devastated land.

"No person except a natural born citizen, or a citizen of the United States, at the time of the adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the office of President" it appears mccain was born in the Military base at Panama canal. Fight is on. Obama, is being investigated as to whether he fits the bill for presidency as well. Perhaps Niether will get the job.? A committee is sterring a War crimes case against Bush and a few Aides after Jan 20. glad Neither run here. :)

I hope he is successful. I wrote off President Bush before he was reelected. I heard him answer that journalist who wanted him to consider defeat. But I really think McCain is too far behind. Too many people support Obama who has used racist tactics, and who has exploited children. Biden was lauded for not messing up a debate .. when a good candidate would have appropriately mopped the floor. It is sad to see what Democrats accept.

Dont despair Happy...It seems some political tricks are still in the bag. The candidate who led at Aug. has 10/12 times won on the day. Mc Cain led in Aug. after the Georgia fiasco. So with that bit of history and the fact GOP. is purging massive amounts of votes, maybe they can swing a duped win ..Like they did for Bush?..You look in on that link? got another. http://www.globalresearch.ca/index.php?context=va&aid=10553 this one shows why they chose their running mates. both sides that is.

Cannot understand people praising McCain's war service and saying it makes him better as a commander in chief. As he was captured, and spent time as a prisoner, does that make him a good tactician or a good strategist?

More to do with his understanding of geopolitical matters. he is dumb as on Economy and admits it. It appears the Georgia/Ossetia fling was for his benefit? As he can only really beat Obama on the back of Racism,Foriegn policy, dont be surprised if they go to war again to show his Ability to handle foriegn matters compared to Obama and his talk approach? Mick, look into the Links I posted,Its top level research..will make you amazed at what is going on over there. Hes dangerous for sure!
