Padraig Harrington and Jim Furyk shot two-under 68s to lead the PGA Grand Slam of Golf after the first round today.
In the 36-hole tournament for major winners, Retief Goosen made par and fellow South African Trevor Immelman hit six-over 76 in strong winds at the Mid Ocean Club in Bermuda.
Harrington, the US PGA and British Open champion, birdied three of the last five holes.
"There were times when you couldn't get at the pin from certain places on the fairway, and understanding how to shape the ball in the wind was essential," Harrington said.
Furyk, in for Tiger Woods, made the turn all square after two birdies and two bogeys on the front nine.
He eagled the par-5 11th but bogeyed three holes later and needed a birdie on the last hole to catch Harrington.
Goosen, replacing Phil Mickelson, started with seven straight pars, and birdied the par-4 eighth but bogeys at holes nine and 17 sandwiched a second birdie at 10.
Masters champion Immelman endured a miserable back nine which included double-bogeys at holes 11 and 16.
First place earns $US600,000 ($A859,000) and the Pink Jacket, while fourth place pays out $US200,000 ($A286,000).
Angel Cabrera defeated Harrington in a three-hole playoff last year in Bermuda.
