Nigel Lappin joins Cats coaching staff

15/10/2008 5:47:00 PM.  |
Newly retired Brisbane triple-premiership midfielder Nigel Lappin will join the coaching staff of beaten AFL grand finalists Geelong.

Lappin, 32, takes up the assistant coaching role with the Cats after last month turning down a request from new Brisbane coach Michael Voss to reverse his retirement decision.

Lappin played 279 games with the Lions and was a four-time All Australian, but managed just 22 matches in the past three seasons as he battled injury.

"We are thrilled to be able to add Nigel to our coaching panel," Geelong football manager Neil Balme said.

"Nigel's record speaks for itself and we are looking forward to his knowledge and teaching ability helping the club to continue to be strong."

Lappin said he admired the way Geelong had built themselves into an AFL powerhouse.

"The club has gone from strength to strength over the years and I have seen playing against them how they have developed," he said.

"I have great respect for the way the club has gone about building its team and am excited to be joining them and working with the players and coaches."
