Kumble, Clark in doubt for Test

16/10/2008 7:54:00 AM.  | AAP
Australian paceman Stuart Clark and Indian captain Anil Kumble should both prove their fitness on Thursday in their teams' final training sessions before the second Test.

India's selection chairman Kris Srikkanth is unconcerned by Kumble's shoulder problem, which the skipper described to his Australian opposite number Ricky Ponting as a mild case of tendonitis.

Clark, meanwhile, is expected to be right to play from Friday despite elbow soreness that required a painkilling injection during the first Test in Bangalore.

Both sides are a chance to name an unchanged XI for the Test, with no other injury concerns evident in either camp.

The pitch for the match has been affected by recent monsoons, and will provide a variation on Mohali's traditional pace-friendly surface.

It is green-tinged in appearance but also features bare patches, suggesting there will be some spin in it as the game goes on.

There has been debate in India about the balance of the home side, and whether three quicks and one spinner would be a superior mix to the two quicks, two spinners approach taken in Bangalore.

If a player is to be left out it might just have to be Kumble, but such a decision would be dramatic indeed given that it could effectively end the captain's 18-year Test career.
