Fake 000 calls putting lives at risk

23/11/2008 12:34:00 PM.  | Victoria Owens
There are concerns lives are being put at risk by hundreds of people using the triple 0 ambulance service as a taxi.

More than 22,000 people called for an ambulance for everything from breaking a nail to having their bed adjusted.

Health minister John Della Bosca says some of the excuses being given are completely inappropriate.

“Like a person asking paramedics to retrieve a pillow which fell off the bed because he was too tired to retrieve it; a person who claimed she’d cut her foot but it was in fact a piece of beetroot lodged in her slipper; a person who just rang the paramedics so they could adjust her bed and a person complaining that they couldn’t sleep.”

Shadow Health Minister Jillian Skinner says it’s wasting vital resources.

“The real problem is that ambulances have to respond to all calls just in case it is a matter of life and death.”

“Where there are addresses that are known to be regular callers for unnecessary matters – I think the government should consider charging those people the cost of getting the ambulance to their home.”

It's the only way these people are going to learn hit them in the pocket. You must also remember this you cannot put brains in statues.

as amember of the nsw ambulance service, with 35 years experience of serving the public, i must say that the reports in the media are statistics and numbers presented by the nsw ambulance management in order to appease the government of nsw. numbers given to the media were somewhere around 1 in 45 were unneccesary calls to 000. the realistic number lies somewhere in 1 in 10 (anecdotally). we serve the lowest 10% of the socioeconomic ladder and of those, 90% are healthcare card holders.

doesn't that tell you something george? that those who are on healthcare cards are of poorer health? that they maybe below the poverty line. like the elderly? i know ambos have a tough life. but please dont take it out on those less fortunate. maybe they are the only ones using it as it costs so much to call an ambulance if you do not have a card or a health fund. my father made me drive him to the hospital while he was having a heart attack rather than call you. i hated him for it

Here here George, in some parts of the US they have a system where, should a treating Paramedic, Emergency Dept Nurse AND Emergency Dept Doctor all agree that the 'patient' did not warrant an emergency ambulance as would be deemed by common sense, the 'patient' is charged the full costs regardless of pension or insurance status. Bring THAT here and save us from those little blue cards....
