Five youths involved in a car accident, sat eating McDonalds on the footpath, while an elderly man in the other vehicle was dying.
An 82-year-old man died in hospital, and his 72-year-old partner remains fighting for her life, after their van collided with an unregistered high-performance vehicle on the Gold Coast on Saturday.
A disqualified teenage driver was behind the wheel of the Subaru WRX, which was carrying five passengers.
The owner of the car is known to police due to past hooning offences – the car had been impounded for 48 hours on November 13.
Witnesses heard a loud crash at around 12:10pm – the elderly couple’s 1974 Escort panel van collided with the teen’s car, at what neighbours described as a notorious roundabout frequented by hoons.
As neighbours helped at the scene, and comforted the distressed woman, witnesses said the five youths didn’t once help, and just sat “emotionless” on the footpath eating fast food.
"They just stood there and then they sat down and then someone dropped Maccas off to them," resident Stephen Waymouth told goldcoast.com.
The five youths were uninjured.
The driver was charged with obstructing police – three were taken away by police, but any other charges are yet to be laid.
Police are still investigating whether the Subaru was speeding at the time of the crash.
