Gunnedah included in disaster zone as NSW floods spread

30/11/2008 9:11:00 PM.  |

The northern NSW region of Gunnedah Shire has been included in areas declared "natural disaster" zones, following torrential rain over the weekend.

On Friday, State Emergency Service (SES) crews responded to flash flooding in the northern NSW town of Tamworth.

Torrential rains throughout the district continued over the weekend, causing flooding and damage to infrastructure, homes and rural properties.

Premier Nathan Rees on Sunday said affected areas extended to the Gunnedah shire.

Emergency Services Minister Tony Kelly said the natural disaster declaration would provide for "a range of assistance to residents, business owners and councils whose properties are damaged".

"More importantly, it ensures councils are reimbursed for the cost of repairing public infrastructure," he said in a statement.

Member for Tamworth Peter Draper said the Namoi River, in northwestern NSW, was at almost 7.8 metres early on Sunday.

SES personnel evacuated a few residences in Gunnedah due to rising floodwaters.

Many roads were closed and 35 requests for public assistance had been received by the SES.

Get ready for more and more weather based disasters, but it has zero to do with CO2 emissions. There are much larger forces at play but very few are willing to talk about them. It is financial suicide to not tow the line. Do your own research.

oh well let me see how many floods i went through when i lived in gunnedah, every 7 yrs and then a few in tamworth. they happen, its a part of living in the country, you have drought then you have flood. they even built a levie for the 1/100 yr flood while i was there. thats why the water went a different way this time silly major. best flood was when all the country music fans had their tents on the river bank & it flooded, they were all floating down the river. smart it was.
