Two-year-old drowns in backyard pool

30/11/2008 3:30:00 PM.  | Victoria Owens

Parents are being warned to urgently check their pool fences and keep an eye on their children after the third backyard drowning in a week.

A family in Newcastle are mourning the loss of their two-year-old son who's drowned in their backyard pool overnight.

The toddler at Charlestown, south of Newscastle, was found by a family member in the pool around 7pm. He was rushed to John Hunter Hospital but died a short time later.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding his death as a report is prepared for the Coroner.

This is the third child to drown in the past week.

It's nice to have a pool in the yard but with it also comes a thing called REPONSABILITY need I say anymore?

These are not drowings they are straight out murder. When will the NSW Police charge these parents. They only have the children to get the money from the Government. The poor little children are suffering a lot these days. The baby bonus and other handouts shoult be given straight to the hospitals who have to take care of the neglected children.

Please consider the family and the relatives who have suffered this tragedy before posting comments. Many of them will be read over the coming days. This family will now be trying to grieve for the loss of their child and do not need comments made without knowledge of the circumstances.

Mr Gatt of Blacktown please keep such negative comments to yourself, its no help to the family or those affected by this tragedy. You do not know the details of this accident so its best not to comment. As a parent that this has happened to accidents do happen in split seconds, our daughter climbed our pool fence on our decking whilst changing the nappy of another son. Hannahs Foundation supports Families in Australia who have lost children to drowning and we are doing just that here.

Mr Henderson your comments are irrevocable, however I invite you and whoever would like to sit in the Coroners Court and listen to our daughters inquest for three days and discover the real facts behind our daughters death. I was not neglectful of our daughter nor of the five children I have and baby bonus, well Id like to qualify for it Mr Henderson " therefor by the grace god i go"

When my son was younger, one of my biggest fears was finding him floating dead in the pool. I always tried my best to check on him and the pool. While my pool is fenced, we still like to play in its vicinity. Once he accidentally fell in, but I quickly dragged him out. There were also 2 other occasions when kids who couldn't swim, accidentally fell in, and fortunately were pulled out quickly. My heart goes out to those who lost their children like this. It can happen so easily.

I completley agree as I have been in similar circumstances. "Concerned Taxpayer" and "Joe Gatt" have clearly never been the full time carers of young children, becasue if they had they would know just how quickly these things can happen, even with the best supervision, you cannot be in two places at once!
