Man filming children at Darling Harbour charged

1/12/2008 8:18:00 AM.  | Laura Tunstall
A man caught filming children swimming at Darling Harbour in Sydney has been charged with child pornography offences.

Onlookers called police after seeing the man at Darling Harbour yesterday afternoon pointing a mobile phone at a group of children.

Around 15 children aged between two and twelve were paddling in the water - police will allege the mobile had an inbuilt camera which the man was using to film them.

The 40-year-old, of no fixed address, was arrested.

Further investigations saw police allegedly find a number of photographs and videos of young children on the phone.

The man's been charged with child pornography possession and will face court today.

For what crime? Presumably the children were clothed? So what crime has he committed by filming people in a public place? For crying out loud what a waste of time.... this guy is getting charged while the people comitting the actual offences of child sex are still out there. You may as well arrest all drug users while you are at it and let the drug lords do whatever they want... oh wait...

It wasn't Henson and they were wearing clothes. Why does one get special treatment? Maybe because he is an artist.

Getting scary. I've ditched all my family album shots of my son when he was three playing nudie in the garden. I will close my eyes whenever a Kimbies or Snuggles ad comes on tv. God forbid that I get caught with a picture of my (now deceased) wife breast feeding our kids over 30 years ago. I promise never to point a camera at anything animate on the beach. Under current interpretations just about every last one of us is "guilty" of having some form of "child pornography". Fools!

God! What has our society become? If the Hetty's of this world had been around in the mythical days, Jesus would have been charged when he said "Suffer the little children to come unto me". I am an old man in the 70's, I live at a beach and haven't been within 100 metres of the beach in two years, but I couldn't think of anything I would rather take a photo of than children or teens enjoying themselves on an Australian Beach. How that would allow me to recapture a little of my youth.

Can you believe it? The police " Alledge" the phone had a camera in it? Either it does, or it doesn't.! Not like the damn phone can sue for libel now is it. Idiots! If people are true to form, we'll see the Flipancy come out on this. Flipant until its their own being filmed! Tar and feather the Idiot.

So if your child is swimming with a group of other children you cannot take a photo of them? This is absurd, it is not pornography in any way. What are we turning into?

Nobody bothered to raise an eyebrow when these laws were publicly announced some time ago. In fact some thought it a good Idea with the like of Hendson (Which I have no artistic gripe with). *But now when in reality, political correctness and save the children is horribly out of control and is affecting the way NORMAL PEOPLE BEHAVE WITH THEIR FAMILIES. Our society is weak and sick. Hell, It's so bad. That you can be labeled a pedophile for DRAWING pictures for gods sake. Reverse the law NOW.

This would be absurd if the photos taken were merely of kids playing. In this particular case, I think we can only assume the man had photos that are considered pornographic. But It is scary to hear that people are actually afraid of taking photos of their own child because of the recent controversies on this issue. I think it's about time we all sit down together and draw a line on this topic.

you cannot take photos on the beach of antone wthout their permission. from watchng bondi rescue. a bloke was taking pics of adult females and they called the cops on him. i wouldn't want some stranger taking pictures of my daughter. if she is playing with your kids that is fine but if you have no connection then no.
