Bush's 'biggest regret' on Iraq, Saddam

2/12/2008 10:00:00 AM.  | AAP
Outgoing US President George W Bush says his "biggest regret" in office was US intelligence that incorrectly stated Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction.

"A lot of people put their reputations on the line and said the weapons of mass destruction is a reason to remove Saddam Hussein," Bush said in an interview with US ABC News set to air in the US on Monday evening.

"It wasn't just people in my administration. A lot of members in Congress, prior to my arrival in Washington, DC, during the debate on Iraq, a lot of leaders of nations around the world were all looking at the same intelligence," he said.

"I wish the intelligence had been different, I guess," Bush added.

Bush, only weeks ahead of leaving office on January 20, would not speculate on whether he would have ordered the invasion of Iraq in March 2003 had the intelligence been correct.

"That is a do-over that I can't do," Bush said.

Bush also said that he was not prepared for war when terrorists struck the United States on September 11, 2001, only eight months into his presidency.

"Well, I think I was unprepared for war. In other words, I didn't campaign and say, 'Please vote for me, I'll be able to handle an attack.' In other words, I didn't anticipate war," he said.

Remember when the U.N. weapons inspectors were in Iraq all those years ago. They were inspecting different sites and were denied access to view other sites. What were the United States meant to think. Saddam Hussein was being evasive which led the United States to think that he was hiding weapons of mass destruction. Saddam Hussein only had himself to blame for the invasion. If he allowed unlimited access everywhere there would not have been a war as there would have been no reason to invade !

Frank: The weapons inspectors had unlimited access during the last few months before they were pulled out,Which was Months before the war.During that unlimited access period they found no evidence of WMD's.They told USA and UN that they could not find any evidence of WMD's BUT BUSH still went to war.WHY?

"I wish the intelligence had been different". Bulls..t you created your own internal committee to vet and distort what the CIA/NSC/FBI provided in regards to WMD'S. In effect you manufactured this evidence. You will be remembered as the most intelligence (in more ways than one) challenged U.S. president in history.

The Equalizer-You would have to include Rudd in that assessment because he was of the very firm belief that Saddam had WMDs.

Yes and no, ASIO would have had some intel but most of it came from the White House as flawed distorted semi truths. Howard would have believed anything Bush told him and Krudd really only had this fake info with which to make a determination. Bottom line, they were all conned.

The Equalizer-So then why are they the bad guys if they were all conned.
