Hit or miss? Media confusion over Wes Carr single sales

2/12/2008 11:01:00 AM.  | Jesse Perez

Following the finale of Australian Idol 2008, there has been some confusion in the media that has reported the sales of Wes Carr’s single You – with some outlets saying the single was a success, and others, far from it.

As of December 1, around 8300 units have been sold of the Idol’s debut single – but if this constitutes as a success, seemingly, is open to interpretation.

Wire service AAP reported yesterday that “Australian Idol winner Wes Carr has topped off last week's win with strong sales of his first single.”

You, the first effort of the Bondi singer, has debuted at number three this week, behind last week's No.1, Poker Face, and the Kings Of Leon, who sit at No.2 and No.4 with Sex On Fire and Use Somebody.”

But other news organizations begged to differ.

News Limited said of the success of Carr’s release:

“The Bondi singer-songwriter hit No. 3 in the ARIA singles charts yesterday with You, behind Lady GaGa's chart-topper Poker Face and Kings of Leon's Sex On Fire, which have both been in the upper echelons of the top 50 for more than two months.”

“Fans downloaded only 8300 copies of You in the six days after the Sydney Opera House finale.”

Going deeper, Undercover.com.au’s Paul Cashmere said the single sales were indicative of a lackluster public.

“After winning Australian Idol and after being seen by around 1.5 million people, You, the single for Wes Carr, has only sold 8,292 units.” Cashmere reported.

“Of the 8,292 units, 8,291 were digital. (Who was the only person in Australia who bought a CD single?).”

“The Idol truth is that despite the massive audience that watches the show, it is not translating to the music buying public anymore.”

While some are calling it a poor result, Carr can have some solace in the fact he has outsold 2007 winner Natalie Gauci, who shifted just 7463 units in its first week of release.

In comparison, the debut single of 2003 Idol Winner Guy Sebastian, Angels Brought Me Here, sold 128,679 copies in its first week – over 120,000 copies more than Carr.

Do the maths. Its another Idol flop. So many viewers, so many months and not even 10000 singles sold. A total an utter flop. They must rebrand the show to "Australian Karaoke". The word Idol is a total misrepresentation of the show. If the show did really produce an Idol then there would be by far more music sales. The truth is that the music produced by the karaoke winners is crap and will never sell because they are not real artists. They have been created in a karaoke competition nothingmore

He looks like a country and western singer. Did he sing lots of country and western songs during the competition? Is he going to be doing a country and western album soon?

Andy Shaver, Wes doing a country album are you for real ?.Wes does and sings what Sony BMG says. He may have the versatility to do Merl Haggard but he's a slave to BMG"S contractual bind, forced to jump through the hoops of their song writing mediocrity. The teeny bops may prove me wrong but i doubt it . YOU is it a hit ? Or did BMG buy enough singles to make it platinum for the sake of exposure ?. Perhaps somewhat discomforting for a talented singer and musician on a corperate treadmill .

Wes Carr is a nerd who grew a beard so everybody thought he was cool. I think the problem with Australian Idol is the lack of 'visible support' for the artist after they win. Look at Natalie Gauci, haven't heard a peep from her in ages. The winners singles are usually crap and there seems to be little follow up after that. Maybe the show should change, let the singers do the songs they love, their favourites, their own style and let Australia choose that way.

The visible lack of support is obvious because no-one will support a person who has won a karaoke competition. If you won a karaoke competition do you think you would be offered recording contracts? The answer is no. If I were a record exec I would offer someone I saw with talent who I could visualise selling thousands of albums. There is no money in selling a single. There is only money in selling thousands of albums. Karaoke stars will never do that. A bad investment for any record company.

Ummmm....you forgot to mention that it's not available over the counter until tomorrow (Dec 3), so that's why 8,291 out of 8,291 were digital downloads. I'd imagine that sales will increase significantly from tomorrow because most of the mums and dads that watch Idol would never have made a digital download in their life.

Andy, is there anything else in your vocab apart from "karaoke'? You said Idol winners are not stars cause karaoke doesn't sell thousands of albums. there are many singers who make good living out of releasing covers here in aus and america. Guy sold half a million of his debut album (originals) and was 2nd-highest selling album in aus. in 2003 after only 4 weeks of sales. that's not success to you? btw, Shannon's debut hit, What About Me, is a cover.

YES 4 for the price of a cd single your better off waiting. only reason i downloaded the digital version was to listen to it on my mp3 player until CD is released which big w & all other outlets dont have it yet? not until 8th dec

You are a moron who clearly doesn't do much research. Wes' single was not released for over the counter sale until today. If Australia chooses to ignore this guy, it will be our loss. He is a FAR better musician than Shannon Noll. We already let Natalie Gauci down, people really need to pull the carrot out of their arses and support these artists. I will admit there has been some dog winners in its run but the last two winners of this contest are really talented musicians. I love the track

There's only one Australian Idol, our very first, GUY SEBASTIAN. After 5 years he is blowing everyone away, both in Aus and the USA, and will be releasing material there next year. His Memphis Tour was an out right success, and the corporate world can't get enough of him. He's recorded with the MG's in Memphis USA, and John Mayer in LA, who knows whats next. Guy has proved himself over the past 5 years, that he has amazing talent, as Steve Cropper says - 'the man of many voices'.
