Hooker, McLellan set to compete in 'Ashes of Athletics'

2/12/2008 10:15:00 AM.  |
Australian Olympic gold medallist Steve Hooker will compete next year in an innovative athletics event in England.

A series of athletic events will be held in the streets of Newcastle, rather than the usual setting of a track and field stadium.

Olympic silver medallist Sally McLellan is also set to compete in a hurdles race.

The event will be restricted to athletes from Australia and England and organisers are promoting it as the Ashes of athletics.

The Australian cricket team will be in England at the same time and will have a one day match against England only 10kms away a day after the athletics event.

The inaugural event is schedule for September 19 at the Newcastle-Gateshead Quayside.
