Decorated field vying for Madden Medal

4/12/2008 8:12:00 PM.  |
If the medals already won by the seven nominees for the AFL Players' Association's Madden Medal were heaped together, they could possibly sink a small boat.

Between them, they have notched nine premierships, 21 club best and fairest awards, three Brownlows and a Coleman Medal, not to mention a collective 2,092 AFL games.

Retiring greats Robert Harvey, Scott West, Shane Crawford, Peter Bell, David Neitz, Nigel Lappin and Mal Michael are the contenders for Friday's award, named after former AFL ruckmen Simon and Justin Madden.

Awarded for the first time last year to former North Melbourne defender Glenn Archer, the medal recognises the achievements both on and off the field of players whose careers ended this year.

Other awards to be handed out at the AFLPA ceremony include the community spirit award, the personal development award and the football achievement award.

The community spirit award recognises involvement in charitable work, community development, supporting disadvantaged people and tackling social issues.

The personal development award recognises business achievements, education and training, family support and coping with and recovering from long term injury.
