Four men have appeared in a Sydney court, accused of being involved in a major interstate drug ring run by a murderer from his jail cell.
Detectives from the Middle Eastern organised crime squad worked on 12 Sydney properties at dawn this morning, arresting five men.
Similar operations took place in Victoria, with two others now behind bars.
It's alleged the men are part of a group smuggling more than a quarter of a million dollars worth of ice and cocaine across the border – all coordinated from an inmate in a NSW maximum security prison cell.
Inmates used dental floss tied to a mobile phone, to throw and retrieve it in the middle of the night at Lithgow jail.
The alleged ringleader is a notorious Sydney murder, who's suing Commissioner Ron Woodham for being put in isolation.
Commissioner Woodham had this to say while speaking with 2GB’s Ray Hadley.
“I’ve got a message for this particular individual: If he thinks he’s been isolated before, and he can complain about it, wait till he sees what he’s got tomorrow,” he said.
Only one of the men appeared in court today, the others remained in their cells.
They've all been refused bail.
