Kevin Rudd spends $600,000 on travel

4/12/2008 7:30:00 PM.  | AAP

Oh, to have Kevin Rudd's travel kitty.

In the first seven months of the Rudd government, the prime minister's overseas jaunts cost taxpayers just over $600,000, according to a register of parliamentary travel released on Thursday.

But it wasn't just money being dished out.

Mr Rudd handed back $105.85 related to a trip to Hong Kong in December 2005. It was revealed earlier this year that Mr Rudd used the visit as an excuse to get out of a dinner with disgraced former WA premier Brian Burke.

The biggest ticket item on Mr Rudd's travel itinerary was an 18-day round-the-world trip, which took him to the United States, Romania, Belgium, Britain and China - at a cost of $427,539.

The register, which covers the period from January to June 2008, included trips to Indonesia, East Timor and the Middle East, which occurred late in 2007.

Mr Rudd's travel expenses for the second half of 2008, which will be released in mid-2009, are likely to be just as substantial.

The prime minister has already ventured to Japan, Malaysia, South Korea, Singapore, Indonesia, China, New Zealand, Niue, twice to the United States, Peru, and is heading again to Indonesia next week.

However, political turmoil in Thailand means a trip there has been cancelled.

Globe-trotting Trade Minister Simon Crean, who has travelled the world prosecuting Australia's trading interests, accumulated an overseas travel bill in excess of $300,000.

The only politician who managed to rack up travel expenses in excess of $100,000 without being a minister or a parliamentary secretary was Liberal Alan Ferguson, the former Senate president.

He totted up overseas travel worth $125,047, made up of a two-week trip to Britain in January to attend a conference of speakers and presiding officers of the commonwealth.

In April, he spent just under a month travelling to the Netherlands, Belgium, Britain and Portugal, leading a delegation to parliamentary institutions.

Special mention should go to Labor rising star, Bill Shorten.

The Victorian MP was one of only a handful of politicians to have paid heed to a long-term directive to use frequent flyer points to redeem airfares where possible.

Mr Shorten saved taxpayers the most money, taking frequent flyer flights worth more than $9,000.

Others to use points travel included Labor's John Faulkner, Daryl Melham and Martin Ferguson, former senators Lyn Allison and Natasha Stott Despoja from the Australian Democrats and Liberals Bruce Billson and Russell Trood.

In a separate report on domestic travel by former politicians and governors-general, WA-based former opposition leader Kim Beazley was the biggest spender, accumulating $25,000 worth of domestic airfares in the first six months of 2008.

Former prime minister John Howard, who lost government and his seat last year, spent $2,856 on domestic airfares.

Mr Howard, who is reportedly getting a refresher course in driving after being ferried about for 11 and a half years as prime minister, also ran up a bill worth $48,207 for the use of a commonwealth car.

Good on you Kevin the reason I cannot go on a holiday overseas is that you have spent my holiday money and left me with nothing but you have done this to plenty of Australians. How have we enjoyed the time that you spent overseas for us did we have a good time, did we travel well on the flights and were we held up at any airports. I would rather have done them for myself. Good flying Jan

Labor screamed when Howard was in power that he spent money traveling overseas. It was nothing like this, it is just ridiculous to the extreme. Labor are such hypocrites. Rudd has delusions of grandeur, and the public are just sitting there and taking it hook line and lead balloon? Rome is burning and he is playing his fiddle.

I agree totally with this comment, especially the hypocrites part. I also think the average puntrer is starting to think the same way. I think i'll set up a Hypocrite Watch scheme.

how long does it take to get a refresher course in driving? doesn't his wife drive? $48k for getting driven around when you are no longer the pm. and why are we still paying air travel for him, beasley and others? no wonder we are going broke. these people should be paying their own way. we have to, so should they

Kevin, please make the next ticket you buy a one way ticket! You and your government are a joke, lucky you were left such a nice big war chest from the coalition government that you have been able to blow pretty quickly. Wonder what you would have done if you didn't have that at your disposal, I guess we'll find out soon enough when it's all gone! Get on you're plane Kev, and don't come back, and take that pathetic front bench of your's with you. Oh and the NSW Labor party!

Does anyone expect that the new leader of a country -any country- isn't going to travel overseas to meet with his international counterparts? The position of Prime Minister is about more than running the country, it's also about promoting the country. John Howard did plenty of travelling...so did Keating, Hawke, Fraser, Whitlam...meeting with other leaders is part of the job and I for one think it would look pretty stingey if Kev wanted to discuss world affairs using MSN Messenger.

Tom good thought but they'll wangle it so we pay.

Friday, 05 December 2008

I'm with Lez. Do you really think that Rudd is travelling so that he can sit on a beach in Koh Samui and sip Mai Thais? This is about building international relationships which is one of the most important roles the PM has, particularly when the world is in the state its in. So while for you maybe travel is about relaxing, for him it is a vital element of his role as our leader. Now think, do you just need something to criticise the PM about seeing as he is yet to slip up?

Jane this isnt about them going on the trip but 600,000 dollars is a tad excessive dont you think. he was out of the country for about 20 days max, even if he paid 2000 a night in a hotel thats only 40,000. he doesnt need a private jet he is the PM not a billionaire fly business class and stop wasting our money.

Andy Mac-And wait there’s more. Remember the way Rudd and his cronies used to criticise the Coalition for what they called 'Political Advertising’. Now they are in power they are doing the same thing. They never say a word about the large sums that the near failed State of NSW spends on advertising-oh no that would be getting into the 'BLAME GAME' blame is only reserved for the Coalition-they are the only ones that ever do anything wrong. Wake up AUSTRALIA.

600,000 in the first 6 months as PM !!! We are a country of morons, we deserve everything they heap on us. Both sides criticise the other for outrageous behaviour in Parliament, insults etc...they also whine and complain about how much the other party spends when in Govt, on just this sort of thing. Labor were always whinging about taxpayers money and how much of it Howard and Co wasted...and look at the head honcho in his first 6 months. We all deserve to be ripped off by all of them, we would rather be in blog site insulting others, rather than making these bloated politicians accountable for every dollar of ours they spend. While we have ordinary hard working Aussie's footing the bills of these parasites and every other parasite, sitting getting money for nothing, all we can blog about is "right wing" and " left wing". They are bleeding us dry and all you care about is which side of centre someone is. You deserve the contempt with which they treat you, both state and federal.

That is disgusting, who do they think they are. I think the government has forgotten who keeps them in power and hands over 45% of there wage to keep the country flowing. (Its the tax payers) It makes me so angry when these politicians blow money i work hard for. i think there hotel bills should be made public, see how much went on porn and the mini bar.

And if you also add up all the time an money wasted to manage this Labor rabble in Australia and Globally + Embassy costs, it will be even more. Rudd is only interested in one thing his smug image. When he attended the G20 he was at the end of the photo line (Not happy Jan). No one wants to know him or Swan. If they do they will follow their own advice, thank goodness. They are fools globally, federally and state, no credibility and waning by the day. Rudd will order a new jet, too small Jan.
