Soldiers could soon undergo annual mental health checks after an investigation into the suicide of an army captain.
Captain Andrew Paljakka took his own life in late February of 2007, after returning from six weeks of service in Afghanistan, in July the previous year.
An inquiry into the suicide has found a combination of post traumatic stress disorder, drug and alcohol dependence, depression, and his own personal problems all contributed to his fatal decision.
A series of recommendations have been agreed to, including an annual mental health check for Defence personnel, and suicidal risk profiling for alcohol and drug related cases.
