17-year-old Melbourne actress Jessica Jacobs killed by train

15/05/2008 3:25:00 PM.  |
A young Melbourne actress has been killed by a train on her way to buy her brother a birthday present.

Seventeen-year-old Jessica Jacobs tripped and fell on railway lines at Cheltenham railway station on Saturday, May 10, and was struck by a train, family friend Jeff Joseph said on Thursday.

She was heading to buy her brother Adam a birthday present, he said.

Jessica, known as Jesse to her friends, was well known in the world of children's television, starring in Saddle Club, Worst Best Friends, Fergus McPhail and Holly's Heroes.

She also appeared in live productions, including the Sound of Music with Bert Newton and Lisa McCune.

Mr Joseph said Jesse, a student at Sandringham Secondary College, was a tenacious, popular and bright girl.

Her funeral will be held on Friday at the Holy Trinity Church in St Kilda.

The death comes after another person involved in the Saddle Club series, Canadian rock musician Carl Dixon, was critically injured in a car accident.

Dixon was recording an album for the series, in which his daughter Lauren is also a star.

Jessica also featured on that album.

Dixon suffered broken bones, head and facial injuries in a head-on smash at Ballan, west of Melbourne, on April 16.

He remains in hospital, but has posted a letter to fans on his website, saying while his extensive injuries are a challenge, he is upbeat about the situation.

This is a tragedy. I have seen this young girl on those programs, and liked her work. My commiserations to her family.

Now that I have thought more about this tragedy, I want to know why this accident could happen. I want the government body responsible identified and I want those responsible sacked.

Ball, I would enjoy hearing your response as to how the heck you come up with such logic. Your annoying comments on everything and anything defy belief. I dont know whether you are taking us all for a ride or what. I have never seen such ridiculous comments from anyone on this site like yours. LIVENEWS.COM staff must absolutely wet their pants when they read some of your garbage.

You have a point David? Or are you hoping to become famous as the shadow in my inevitable glow? So who pays you to produce such vapid accusations? Rudd? Iemma? The taxpayer? It isn't normal for 17 yo's to be hit by trains. Something systemic must have gone wrong. Whoever is responsible should be found out.

Gazza Benson, I think you are correct. It alarms me that the juxtaposition of an absolute tragedy and him looking for someone to blame comes as a normal train of thought. Even more alarming is that he thinks I am looking to 'become famous in the shadow' of his 'inevitable glow'. Im sure he is taking the piss. If not, more like just another keyboard economist geek with nothing better to do. Maybe a job would be beneficial for some 'real life' experience.

ODD BALL ,some constructive input so elequently brought to the table by David NSW. I realise there is some animosity toward the system on your part for a perceived unjust dissmissal from a government dept. Some of us have difficulty in moving on especially if we have too much time on our hands , this is human nature . Comments such as these at a time when a Family is grieving and the facts have not been made available are irresponsible .Try and show a little empathy next time .

She tripped and fell, this is no ones fault, how is this the governments fault? Let her rest and be remembered.

What an absolute tragedy this is. My heart goes out to her family and close friends. I too would love to know why these accidents keep happening on our railway lines, someone needs to be held accountable. I know that such action will not bring our loved ones back but to prevent this from happening anymore.

Jess was an amazing person, I was blessed to know her for a short time, while we had two of the same classes. The entire school is grieving and sends their deepest sympathies. She has impacted our school and local community in a way she would never have realised. She was so loved, such a bright person, such an amazing spirit and will live on through all of us.

Such a beautiful talented girl. An absolutely tragic and down right freaky ending to a young life. You just may never know where and when Death is waiting to trip you up.

Jess, I will really miss you. I grew up watching 'The Saddle Club' and I thought you were a great actress. Your on-screen sister goes to my school and I brought the series 2 of 'The Saddle Club' and my class is having a memorial for you.

Jessica Jacobs was a wonderful Australian youth...Although I never knew her, my heart will always remember her as a beautiful young actress with a caring and loving heart. Everyone loved her from particular shows such as saddle club, worst best friends...But unfortunatley, fate has taken her away from all of us, and there is nothing we can do about that now. I just wish that I knew that this was going to happen the day before she died, so no matter what I had to go through I wouldve stopped her.

My deepest deepest sympathies go out to all involved, however I feel such a tragedy like this could have been prevented. If our government was less stingy then a simple trip like this could have been prevented, let me show you: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S8Dab4CQ808 if you had tripped then at the worst you would have a nasty bump on your head, not unless you ran at this barrier full force you might flip over it. I mean no disrespect to anyone at all, Jessica you will be missed.....

In theory, a great idea. In reality, we have different types of train sizes on the Sydney network (can't speak for other places), so the doors would not all open at the same spot each time. But i take your point, some kind of barrier would help. Before we do that though we have to put barriers up on road/railway crossings, and not the silly little flashing lights and wooden stick!

Adam: I read your comments yesterday and thought what a smart young person you are - anything is possible and the reason why our money has to go into infrastructure such as this to bring it in line with the 21st Century and beyond - we are so far beind the rest of the world it's a disgrace - this is where it's worth investing our billions which are squandered away - one life lost is too many - our country does not have the same population as others do. Well done!Keep up the good work!

Adam your suggestion is a great idea. Infact train stations and subway stations should look like the one in the video on YouTube in the US and all over the world. And the train tracks should be bigger. That way anoter accident like Jessie Jacobs accident can be avoided. She kind of reminded me of my mom and Jessie Jacobs kind of looked like Renee Sands. I know all of you 80s kids and fellow 90s kids remember "Kids Incorporated". R.I.P. Jessie. Ride Like The Wind in heaven.
