NELSON'S BUDGET REPLY: 5 cents-a-litre

15/05/2008 8:43:00 PM.  | Michael Cavanagh

Brendan Nelson has vowed to blow a $15 billion hole in the Rudd government's first budget, including blocking hikes on pre-mixed drinks and changes to medicare.

In his formal budget reply Dr Nelson promised to oppose the mixer drinks levy arguing that it was no more than a tax binge falsely presented as a health measure.

Still on health Dr Nelson says the opposition will also fight the changes to the Medicare Levy surcharge.

Dr Nelson told parliament that under the government's plans health premiums will increase forcing people to either drop out or face higher premiums.

Dr Nelson admits there is an inflation challenge, but not a crisis - to help bring down costs, a Coalition government would cut fuel excise by five cents a litre.

"The Coalition believes it responsible and fair to return a further $1.8 billion back to hard-working everyday Australians, in the form a five cent a litre reduction in the fuel excise.

"By lowering the price of petrol and the cost of transporting goods this 13 per cent reduction in petrol excise will have a modest, but measureable downward impact on inflation."

It's 5 cents a litre, not a day. That will definitely add up for people who have to drive to work every day. I say have to drive, because public transport just doesn't cut it I'm afraid.

A very well structured response to LAbor's budget. Rudd did not look comfortable. Thought he was going to take his bat and ball at one stage. Well done Dr Nelson, for the first time we hear SOMETHING about petrol prices, food prices, seniors, carers etc etc. The game is on!

WHERE WERE THESE NOBEL IDEAS WHEN THESE JOKERS(LIBS) WERE THERE IN FED GOVT?.. "Well done Dr Nelson, for the first time we hear SOMETHING about petrol prices, food prices, seniors, carers etc etc."... SHAME ON YOU NELSON! "promised to oppose the mixer drinks levy".., THEY SHOULD BE REDUCED FOR YOUNGSTERS,TO CONSUME MORE POISON. What a criminal minded Joker.

Sandy S, Sydney If you had half a brain you would realise increasing tax on these mixer drinks would make no difference in terms of buying less of these mixer drinks. And if you could see past your nose you would see the result will most probably be a shift to harder/cheaper type drinks. Or as the good doctor suggested drugs. Try to see some logic I know you can do it.

Sandy S, Sydney, as for petrol prices, food prices, seniors, carers, well petrol has actually gone up since Krudd won. Food prices I believe you have a point there but then Krudd wont do anything about it anyway, although I estimate food will increase in price due to increase in tax of truckies rego and diesel. Carers were going to get more under Howard anyway but you still have a point there as they deserve more. Seniors were getting more under Howard due to less means and assets testing.

Sandy read the "detail" not the "rhetoric". The Government proposal forecasts alcopop consumption to INCREASE. The "research" shows that consumption has "DECREASED". This is a revenue raiser NOT a habit fixer. The government would have no argument if their forward forecasts showed a decline in consumption. They were caught out BY THEIR OWN BUDGET INFORMATION.

A practical & feasible way to bring down petrol costs! Unlike national fuelwatch scheme from labor which is a complete joke - how will petrol price come down just by "watching" it? Labor is insulting the intelligence of non labor voting Australians, & it seems that about 53% of population has shown that they have similarly low IQ level to labor politicians in the last election. Blocking increase in medicare threshhold will also bring down private health insurance cost which reduces inflation.

Fuelwatch scheme has been running in Perth for a while and has proven to work for a short term but then flops over. Best way to combat fuel prices is competition, perhaps Ethanol could have been partly the answer but Krudd I believe has slashed funding of the R&D Just wait until the dollar comes back down and oil reaches $200 a barrel. Sweet Jesus we will be paying through the nose then. But wait Krudd said during the campaign he would bring down the cost. Hmmm could he have been telling porki

What a most intelligent joker (47%) are you?The petrol prices are increasing worldwide, crude oil will cross $200 mark, very soon, this is due to tampering of your another JOKER(Mr.B), friend of your previous Fed. premier. What did he do in his stupid regime to cut down the cost of FUEL?Any stupid justification available? Be ready to pay more than $2.00 in few months or migrate to Gulf & let us live in peace. Better Study GLOBAL economy affected due to OIL CRISIS,instead watching useless Rugby.

OK I'm not that fussy! What I'm really fussy about is how the ABC corporation programmers can run the show so politically well during the 24 hours. That's Real Power. And the staff there seems to be employed for a lifetime. The politicians only for a few years term. Something has to be wrong!

5% Nelson what was he on about, mate you had 11 years.

Cut the crap you foolish labor voter! This article is about Nelson advocating a 5c per litre cut in petrol price. There is no where in the article that mentions anything about the so called "5%". Either you need a pair of glass or need to consult your specialist for some phychiatric assistance.

W O, Turramurra Howard and Nelson refused to bring down the excise on petrol for 11 years, now because he is just hanging on to his leadership by the a finger on the petrol cap, it is a good idea. What a joke you Liberals have become.

Paul, go and get some perspective - petrol prices did not start becoming a real issue AFTER Rudd the Dudd won the election. Therefore there was no need to cut the petrol tax. Your one-sided moronic comments only further show how ignorant you labor supporters are. No wonder we have a goose PM in Rudd!

Paul, also one more point - how is labor's proposed "fuelwatch scheme" bringing down the prices? It will only remove the current weekly price cycle and have prices pretty much the same each day! Just by "watching" the price WON'T bring the price down! Only people as silly as labor voters/politicians can think of such a futile idea, while the rest of us just treat it as a insult to our intelligence.

These LIBS are morons & m/f...they have poor mathematical skills, 5% of $1.00 is 5cents, & so on.. if one has said in place of liter. Well some one used the word in this forum "half brain", I sincerely admit that even half brain is enough to get a Doctorate in Aus in any field, but these blokes even don't have even a proper degree to match their brain power. Mr RUDD should definitely reduce the EXCISE ON FUEL BY 5% or10%, AS THE CRUDE USED IN AUS IS 90% EXTRACTED LOCALLY! FOR YOUR INFO.(cont...

Sandy, you also need some reality check - anyone with a brand knows 5c of $1 is 5%, but what's the reference of $1 in this context? Are you advocating the petrol price at the moment is $1 per litre? Which planet are you from?

Kevin 07, High Interest Rates '08, All drinking cask wine in '09, Vote him in again in'10? Fancy slogans won't pay your mortgage or keep inflation in control. His answer higher unemployment, Evicted Home owners and Higher Grog prices!

Well a 5c reduction in the price of petrol beats the hell out of 'price watching'. As far as the alcopop tax is concerned Rudd still has not explained how a measure that is supposed to curb consumption is actually going to bring in progressively more tax over a number of years. Some of Swans budget figures are dodgy-for example tax increases are counted as savings-come on.

i have found that the last gov with DR Nelson had everything their own way thru bullying tactics while in Gov for so long thinks that they can keep doing it. Good on you Kevin. The biggest problem that Dr Nelson and his cronies are they dont want Kevin Rudd to succeed, they had all their chances when in Gov why didnt they put the 5cent per litre on then.why do they not want tax levies on certain alcohol at least Kevin is trying to do something to help cull binge drinking with our young kidds.
