Who'll blink? Nelson stares down the government on alcopops

The Coalition has raised the stakes in the fight to win over working families, vowing to block key Labor measures to raise money from the public.

The Opposition will vote down the tax-hike on alcopops in the Senate, and is also promising to cut petrol excise by 5 cents a litre.

Opposition Leader Brendan Nelson has told 2GB’s Alan Jones, kids who buy pre-mixed drinks won't be dissuaded by higher prices.

“So they’ll find some other form of alcohol to purchase – so the kids will chip in and buy a bottle of vodka,” he argued.

“There’ll be no measured dose of alcohol in that. Or they’ll go on to wine-based products. Or some kids will start to look at the cost of ecstasy tablets or other things.”

But Health Minister Nicola Roxon says Dr Nelson is obviously out of touch.

“I’m surprised that Dr Nelson wants to isolate himself as the only person in the country who doesn’t think binge drinking is a problem,” she said.

“We believe that this change in tax on alcopops will be part of the solution and we’re combining that with a strategy of engaging sporting clubs and community leaders.”

The government can outwait Dr Nelson by waiting until July. However, it is a substantial win to Dr Nelson, who has effectively shown the ALP as being the tax and spend bludgers of old.

What happened to Jeff Shaw after his binge drinking episode - I would suggest that all these politicians remember this episode of lies and deception just as the case of ex Justice Einfield when caught speeding. This is a farce and the way to curb it is to stop selling it and have the places shut down to appropriate hours of trading - parents also have to take a lot more responsibility for their teenagers - but to say that the govt doesn't benefit from rising the cost on these items is a joke!

Nothing happened to Shaw. There was debate among the anti corruption groups, and the police integrity group realized they couldn't prosecute a person that wasn't police and the ICAC felt it wasn't their problem. The workers who hid Shaw's disease are now working for other ALP members. Even Iemma has old Shaw boys in his office.

Dr Nelson is right, if young adults (and I call them that not kids because at 18 they are legally adults , if under 18s are drinking that is a totally different problem)want to drink they will not worry about the price. Even now most of the locals around here go to the local bottleshop where its cheaper to stock up and have 6 or 7 of these drinks at home before they go out clubbing later in the night. Then at 10-30- 11-00pm they jump on a train and head into town . A lot of you are out of touch

Absolutley correct...that is exactly what happens...its too expensive to get drunk at the club so they do it at home first, then its more alcohol or even drugs once they get into the city. I don't think people realise that common drugs like E's and marajuana are actaully cheaper than alcohol. Youth have been binge drinking & taking drugs for generations, most of us grow up at some point. But price never stopped us, all it did was help make a decision on the drug of choice for that night.

Roxon uses the proven Rudd technique of misquoting and paraphrasing the opposition...and the media have a habit of publishing the misquotes without analysis. Swan was exposed in Question Time yesterday doing precisely the same thing with a Goldman Sachs quote, and the opposition were prevented from correcting the misquote in parliament. Rudd's ability to stage manage lies will falter and he will collapse like a spoilt brat. Watch (he wan't too happy in Parliament last evening if you watched.

One of my cousins who is now 19 drinks the vodka cruiser sugared rubbish, and has been for years. Her opinion is that this tax will have one of two reactions. Those who can afford it will continue to pay becasue thats what they like to drink. Those who can't afford it, will pool their money, and mix the stuff themselves. It will not in anyway stop them from binge drinking. As for her, the only thing its changed is that she whinges more on a Monday about how she spent on the weekend on alcohol!
