Overprotective parents breeding generation of cotton wool kids

17/05/2008 3:03:00 PM.  | Victoria Owens with AAP

There are concerns our younger generations are growing up ill-equipped with basic survival skills because of a growing number of over-protective parents.

Dubbed the cotton wool generation, the last decade has seen in rise in mollycoddled children who are growing up into nervous adults.

There are concerns kids who are kept from activities like bike riding and climbing trees will be at greater risk of increased anxiety disorders.

NSW Commissioner for Children and Young People Gillian Calvert warned that fears over traffic and stranger danger have meant children are missing out on basic life skills and simple pleasures.

"Over the past 10 years we have seen a real reduction in the range at which children can leave their family home and move freely," Ms Calvert told News Limited.

"Kids tell us they can't ride their bikes around streets anymore."

Doctors at the NSW Commission of Children and Young People and University of NSW conference reported that rates of anxiety disorders are on the rise among children whose freedom is restricted.

Sports Medicine Unit director Dr Carolyn Broderick said fundamental motor skills were developed through play, as well as balance, co-ordination and strength.

"Children now have a fear that wasn't there in the past," she said.

The major problem being that our state ALP governments have been allowed to allow important activity areas to crumble for insurance. Mismanagement meant that the ALP, in NSW couldn't rip money out of health without exposing doctors to high insurance claims. So they limited the claims, and the issue spiraled out of control. Welcome to 21st century ALP.

INDIGESTABALL,more nonsensical drivel . David the ALP have been in power for 1 year now how could you possibly conclude they are guilty of letting play area's crumble? The matter at hand is what is endemic of our society and parents being over protective and the negative impact this will cause their kids .In some suburbs parents would be justified in not letting their kids roam and play at will .Unfortunately David this is modern day reality.

Slick...the ALP have been in power in NSW for a hell of a lot longer than 1 year...in fact we have had a Labor government for 13 years (since April 1995). Insurance is a State issue....hence In Evah Tah Ball's comment. Personally - I blame the media, & the sensationalist claims about everything...they breed fear. They have been since the late 70's early 80's. How can kids learn to get up, if they never fall? How can they protect themselves, if they are never told whats out in the real world?

Does the Commissioner Gillian Calvert have any children-if so at what age did they roam the streets unsupervised? At what age did they cross busy intersections and climb trees on their own? The problem for todays children is one of not enough care. The breakdown of the traditional family structure is responsible for this. Parents are too busy, both working, or parents that are drug or alcohol abusers and parents that have bad or no relationship with each other. The failure of DOCS to adequately look after endangered children should be a more urgent matter than this drivel.
