Rudd to overhaul Australian migration

17/05/2008 11:40:00 AM.  | Victoria Owens
Australia’s migrant program is set to undergo a major overhaul as part of the Rudd government's bid to lure more workers into the country.

Immigration minister Chris Evans has deemed the current migration model as out of date and will table a series of migrant submissions for reform.

It’s hoped the changes will see a boost to migration numbers, promote more skilled and unskilled workers to come to Australia and fill gaps in the skills shortage.

....and at a time when Labor are "planning" for unemployment to grow by 140,000. Are these guys serious?

Makes sence, I am impressed with Rudd. Opening the doors to Asian immigrants is Austalias future - attracting hard working and highly educated Asian immigrants should dominate any migrant policy.

I have no problem with immigration being higher. I object the dishonesty of Rudd's approach, lacking security and promoting people smuggling at the expense of the welfare of Australians and migrants.

We have had less and less "boat people" arriving illegally-this only opens this up to the criminal element again &how long before this allows for the rubbish to enter our shores-anyone wanting to come to this country need to take wait theirturn-not get entry through the back door-why should it only be open to ASIANS what's wrong with HIGHLY INTELLIGENT EUROPEANS-engineers who are forced to go to England &make sandwiches as they get better paid doing that instead of working in their field!

Why, why, why would you want to increase "unskilled migration" unless you simply want to import potential Labor voters?

Geoff:You've hit the nail on the head -that's exactly want they want and is their "hidden agenda" - people need to be a lot more wiser than they have been and forget the rhetoric of how labor will look after them - bottom line is they won't! it's been proven time and time again yet people unfortunately do have very short memories.

Yes indeed, hit the nail on the head with a sledge hammer I remember Asian immigration and I could have sworn most of them were pro Labor, I have nothing against Asians in fact they are one of the most successful immigrants in Australia, they’re skilled well natured and business minded BUT KRUDD is effectively bringing down the QA check by inviting more unskilled, the great John Howard introduced the baby bonus to increase home grown population cutting out the potential probs of immigration

I am pro immigration, I always have been, but i do have qualifications. This country is desperate for skilled workers, so bring them in as long as they have excellant English. Why would you want to bring in unskilled workers, get the bludgers off the dole. IF you have to import people, then allow more refugees to come in, they need a break & many of them probably don't have good enough English to get skilled work for a while so in the intrim they can do the unskilled work.

Will Dudd make a declaration that neither he or any member of his family will have any interest what so ever in immigration to Australia and if they do he will resign as Prime Minister of Australia forth with.

Inviting unskilled workers, and from poor countries, could in fact drive down the wages in Australia. I don’t know but if this is the case this would be directly against the unions. Also KRudd slapped around John Howard for this by accusing him of attempting similar downward wage pressure with the IR laws. Hmmm I feel a hypocrite coming on.

This man is an imbecile. Apart from his admission, in his budget, that over 100,000 people will lose their jobs his policies are going to create a lot more unemployment. There won't be enough jobs for the people already in the Country and he plans on bringing in more. His IR policies are going to send more and more jobs overseas and his Global Warming policies will further deplete job opportunities. It could get worse we could get plummeted into an a la Keating recession due to hefty interest rate rises because this Government intends spending a lot of money to prop up his incompetent State Labor mates.

Let me get this straight: we are going to spend billions of dollars building TAFE's to train our kids in the trades, then we are going to let in a heap of skilled tradesman from overseas to take these jobs . So what jobs are our newly trained TAFE graduates going to do to earn a living? Are we expecting these possibly non english speaking migrants to put on these TAFE students as apprentices ?

Jenni T, add to that - we are going to plan to make 140,ooo of them redundant, then import unskilled migrants to keep up the Labor vote!
