Mokbel to fight extradition in court

24/06/2008 3:30:00 PM.  |
Accused murderer and drug trafficker Tony Mokbel will fight his extradition from Greece in the Victorian Supreme Court.

Mokbel was listed to appear in the Melbourne Magistrates' Court at 10am (AEST) on Tuesday but his hearing was moved to an earlier time.

Outside court his lawyer Mirko Bagaric indicated Mokbel would appear in the Supreme Court next week.

After fleeing Australia in 2006, Mokbel was arrested in Greece last year and flown back to Melbourne following his extradition last month.

Mokbel's lawyers will argue his extradition should not have been allowed while he had an appeal pending in the European Court of Human Rights.

In a separate hearing on Tuesday, one of the women accused of helping Mokbel flee the country was granted bail.

Angela Nissirios, 46, of Burnside, appeared briefly in the Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, and police did not oppose her bail.

Nissirios will face two counts of perverting the course of justice, one count of assisting Mokbel to flee Australia, and one count of dealing in $53,209 known to be the proceeds of crime, when she reappears in court on September 25.

Nissirios spoke only briefly during the five-minute hearing on Tuesday, indicating she understood the conditions of her bail, which include her reporting to police twice weekly, surrendering her passport and not associating with co-accused.
