Solar-powered Prius? It’s closer than you think

7/07/2008 1:40:00 PM.  | Anil Lambert-Patel
Toyota has announced it wants to add solar panels to its Prius hybrid vehicle as soon as early next year.

According to the Nikkei economic daily, the rooftop panels would be able to power the car’s air conditioning on high-end models.

If Toyota goes ahead with the plans it will be the first carmaker to produce a mainstream car with solar panels.

The Japanese auto giant has so far refused to officially comment on the reports.

Toyota launched the Prius in 1997 as the world’s first mass production petrol-electric hybrid.

If a solar panel is "Photovoltaic", why stop at the roof? Surely the bonnet and sides of the car could be done as well. Or does it have to have apretty colour made from some thing or anohter which has its' own Carbon footprint as well? As for Footprints, the prius is right up there with BIGFOOT!

Brake ducting for cooling would allow a mini turbine to create more power, Got an airfilter with pipe? another place for a turbine...Pick up your act Car manufacturers. Kick out the PETROL motor in place of Diesel.change lead Batteries for Lithium, etc.. many things could be done to give a hybrid better economy...still, you just cant shrink its footprint!

The sky is falling, the sky is falling. A quasi electric car will fix it all! Maybe Toyota would accept another 35M of taxpayers money to develop a rainwater tank for it. Greenies and Rudd have lost the plot.
