A crowd of over 200,000 turned up in Berlin to hear Barack Obama’s speech which challenged a new generation of Americans and Europeans to tear down walls between estranged allies, races, and faiths.

The Democratic White House candidate told the mass of people at the campaign rally near the footprint of the old Berlin Wall, that humanity faces a perilous turning point, and it's time to build a world that stands as one.

The speech, in Berlin's famed Tiergarten, was designed to portray Obama, who is challenging Republican John McCain for the White House in November, as a leader with unique global appeal.

"The greatest danger of all is to allow new walls to divide us from one another," said Obama.

"The walls between old allies on either side of the Atlantic cannot stand.

"The walls between the countries with the most and those with the least cannot stand… the walls between races and tribes; natives and immigrants; Christian and Muslim and Jew cannot stand. These now are the walls we must tear down."

As well as his call for cooperation across the Atlantic, Obama went through a list of various challenges, including global warming and international trade.

He told the cheering crowd the world can't remain divided if it's to beat terrorism, global warming and economic disparity.

After watching this man deliver his speech, i was left in awe. What a gift he has for delivering a speech with impact. My hope is he makes President of the States, it appears they have a man on their hands who is not from the usual political mould. All the best in your Endeavours Mr. Obama.

Nick you will get hammered for thse comments - many on here don't like Obama. I think he's brilliant, and i think the US needs someone like him. Intelligent, well spoken, educated, business like, but compassionate, and because of him and wife, combined they represent a large number of people accross a variety of demographics - he really is someone who can unite that country.

Just keep watching you guys, remember this post in one or two years time. He is indeed a masterfull orator - sends a tingle down my spine. But at the end of the day its the things you do and not just the things you say and how you say them. His inspirational words mask his declared and stated policies and ambitions and if you sift through those you see the most radical liberal agenda of any American leader in history. Great salesman but- a bit like our very own you-know-who..

Mate I hear you, I have been ostracised simply for asking a question? I Still think this man is destined to do some major wonders IF elected as President of the USA. Of course there will be the many who will follow their Party irrespective of whether they know what they're doing or not. I watched his speech this morning and am looking to find a download of it. A GOOD day to you Concerned :) Now i got housework to do Before the BOSS gets home.. :( LOL

J.Stalin, at present its rather difficult for the man to do much, other than Orate. My belief is he will try something the others before him havn't. Whether this is good or bad, time will tell. At present i think he is a better option than Mcain and couldnt do worse than Bush? Geo-situ politics aside, I think the man will be good for the USA, well i hope he will be?

Hope you're right Nick. God knows the USA needs an image adjustment. But something in my gut says that this guy's a show pony and I don't like his bright eyed and bushy tailed idealism - it always sounds good in the beginning but ends in tears at the business end of the deal when ideology confronts reality and human nature. Everyone loves Barack now 'cos he's so cuddly and friendly and wants to talk to all the bad guys etc. but what happens when the bad guys reach for their guns?

Given a rock star welcome, I think says it all. Politics today are about image, celebrity status, charisma, and dare I say it, sex appeal. Being a great orator is an even bigger bonus. Delve deeper into the policies and the experience, you will find a different image. Strange how the world is willing to stand by while despots dictate and murder their own people.Saddam was one, Mugabe is another. The US is damned if it does and damned if it doesnt, the UN, toothless. Obama is just another celeb.

Good luck to him. If he is elected we hope that he can turn words into deeds unlike Kevin Rudd who is all p@#% and wind.
