'I will lead the Coalition to the next election': Nelson

1/08/2008 11:22:00 AM.  | AAP
Federal Opposition leader Brendan Nelson says he will lead the coalition to the next election.

Despite renewed speculation that his leadership is doomed if his standing in the polls doesn't improve, Dr Nelson said he remained determined to continue in the job.

"People have said to me, from the day that I took this job, they said, look it's the worst job in Australia in politics," he told ABC radio.

"But if I listened to commentators instead of doing what I think is right, then I'd be losing objectivity.

"I am absolutely determined with everything I've ever done in my life to see it through, and I will lead us through to the next election."

Dr Nelson also refused to reveal if he knew the intentions of former Treasurer Peter Costello who is yet to announce if he will stay in politics.

He said while he would like Mr Costello to stay, the former treasurer had earned the right make a decision that was in the best interests of himself and his family.

"I said to him last week, when I had a lengthy chat to him, that I expect he will announce that when he is ready to do so," Dr Nelson said.

Chris Smith is currently interviewing Brendan Nelson (late Friday afternoon). The 1st subject discussed was the obsession of political reporters pursuing any story on his leadership. Chris said that he had received zero phone calls on the subject over the past couple of weeks, and zero emails BECAUSE NOBODY CARES, because it not an issue. Yet, what does the 2GB 5:30 news lead with, only 10 mins later? Yeap! A story about what Brendan Nelson just said about his leadership. Sheesh!!

And again on the 6pm news; Yoni Bashan was beside himself leading the news with the "Brendan Nelson leadership is in trouble" tripe. Talk about a wasted opportunity to actually report the real news with real facts instead of focusing on anti-Liberal political commentary.

What a pity the media didnt spend as much time questioning Mr Rudd on the recession we are about to have. If they quizzed the PRESENT PM with as much vigour as they have Nelson with regard to the leadership of the oppostion, we might actually get a journo with the intestinal fortitude to ask him what happened to his "working family" platform he went to the last election on. What is this obsession with the Opposition, surely it is the PRESENT GOVT who should be getting a grilling by the media.

Susan, Rudd's "obsession" is "Weapons of Mass Distraction". Rudd knows he is devoid of policy. Rudd knows Swan is crap. Rudd is ideoligically locked in the past. SO, if he continues to focus the attention on the Opposition, and the un-thinking media blindly follow his press office releases (that easier than "investigative" journalism), then we get the media coverage focussing on losers like John Hewson. My view is that (when ready) the Opposition will structure the team they need.
