Aussies taking a shine to solar power: Govt

2/08/2008 3:00:00 PM.  | AAP
Environment Minister Peter Garrett says the federal government's controversial solar rebate program is growing fast.

He said today applications for the $8000 rebate have grown at significant levels since the federal budget.

The opposition relentlessly attacked the government for means testing the rebate.

"We've seen record growth in the number of solar rebate applications lodged since the government acted on budget night to better target the rebate to those earning less than $100,000," Mr Garrett said in a statement.

"An average of 522 applications have been lodged weekly since the budget with 794 in one week alone."

Mr Garrett said this rate of application was higher than in any single week before the budget throughout the program's history and was 150 applications per week higher than the average in the four weeks before the budget.

It was far beyond the average of 30 weekly applications at the time of the last coalition budget, he said.

"This confirms that the government took the right step in bringing funds forward for this program and ensuring that they go to those Australian families that most need financial assistance to install solar systems in their homes," Mr Garrett said.

"Despite the scaremongering of the opposition, in the 10 weeks since the budget we have seen continuing solid demand for this program and I am confident that will continue."

Wow, I kept reading comments on here that these new measures had destroyed the Solar industry, so what's up? Is Garrett lying here or is it that the Negative Nellies who write comments on here are just scaremongers who will say anything to try to attack Labor. Of course the rich will always squeal when the social security for the rich schemes so favoured by Costello are scrapped, I guess that was it.

What Garrett has said defies logic. We have limited the number of people who are eligible for the rebate and yet Garret is telling us there are MORE people applying for the rebate than before? It's either Garret has performed data mining to suit his political purpose or the data is somehow distorted in some way. Unless Garrett can explain this apparent discrepency one will always be skeptical about comments made by ANY labor politicians who lacks credibility.

heheheh we do not give a toss what Garrett, Rudd, Wong or Delemma have to say about anything anymore. We have already moved our business overseas to protect ourselves from the biggest recession this country will ever face. My estimate is more than 1Triilion Aussie Dollars will go down a big black Labor hole. Swan and Rudd have no clew.

Garrett, Wong, Swan, Rudd, Gillard, Bowen are all what is called "political opportunist liars". That is they use the truth sparingly. Yes, both sides of politics do it. Please don't pretend that Rudd and his merry men are prissy and clean.

First - this was a liberal govt rebate. Secondly - there has been mass cancellations of solar panels. Thirdly, there is currently a Senate inquiry into this very issue - so clearly there is something to discuss! The suggestion that the rebate has been "better targetted" at those earning less than $100K is ridiculous...those earning less than that could always get it. Finally, 100K is too rich to get an 8K rebate, but too poor to pay a $2K medicare surcharge - some CONSISTANY would be good!

THEY destroyed the solar industry. (Rudd, Garret, Wong). THEY have put companies out of business. A NON income tested rebate for ALL Australian's- what a great idea.
