Another Qantas emergency landing

2/08/2008 8:51:00 PM.  | Alexandra Guzman
A Qantas plane bound for Manila was forced to make an emergency landing at Sydney Airport within two hours from take off.

The international flight took off at 1.20pm and was forced to make an emergency landing at about 3pm at Sydney Airport after the pilot was given priority clearance to land.

A Qantas spokeswoman said the plane landed without incident after the pilot became aware the plane had a hydraulic leak.

“On inspection by engineers it was determined the leak was coming from the spoiler actuator but was not evident before departure,” she said.

“There was no safety issue at any time.”

Aircraft engineers are inspecting the Boeing 767.

The two-hundred passengers on board flight QF19 are being accommodated on another aircraft due to depart at 5.30pm.

It comes a week after an explosion blew a hole in a Qantas jet flying from Hong Kong to Melbourne, forcing the plane to make an emergency landing in Manila.

The Qantas lottery game. Qantas shareholders have to accept responsibility for this and the law needs to be changed so that they can be held responsible for the impending disaster. Because of the greed of the shareholders, money that should be spent on maintenance is being diverted into dividends. Only a massive change of policy will stop a disaster with a Qantas plane in the near future. Foresight is possible here, it won't be an accident, it will be murder by shareholder greed.

Repeat after me...There was no safety issue at any time, There was no safety issue at any time, There was no safety issue at any time... if we say that enough, will that make the problem go away. Let's hope there's not going to be a forth incident in about as many weeks. Talk about setting a point of difference with the upcoming launch of V Australia. Virgin looks to be having a dream run of sorts coming off the Virgin Galactic media day (for an aviation company the current climate).

No doubt Dixon is holding his breath, wishing that the big one will not come until he's finally departed for good.

Looks like some qantas employees are sabotaging the company. Either that or three failed terrossist attempts. Id say, with the direction the press has been going lately, Its the employees. Its a case of corporate espionage on a grandscale with grand risks. Although to a qualified experianced engineer, these problems are known to not be life threatening. But to the lamens eye i guess any in flight problem is cause for concern.

More insightless clap-trap from Hendo! If you are going to make such claims then back them up with facts. Exactly how much money is being diverted from maintenance into dividends? How much does QANTAS spend on maintenance. How has it changed over the years? If you quoted facts instead of left-wing rhetoric then people might start to take you seriously....

Michael, you are so wrong, and it's not just your spelling and grammar. There is nothing deliberate about how these incidents happened. Low morale is deadly in aircraft maintenance, it leads to errors and oversights. Maintenance engineers who are happy and not under stress notice the very little things that are the clues to solving these problems. Under Geoff Dixon the maintenance programs at Qantas have been changed in a way that overloads and distracts it's maintenance staff in a dangerous way
