Quit complaining and move to the country

4/08/2008 2:00:00 PM.  | Chris Smith
If you saw 60 Minutes last night you will have shocked by a story which included a Sydney woman who spends three hours a day in her car.

She’s not driving to Bathurst. She’s going from her home in the Hills District to the city, and back.

This woman was carrying on about the traffic and complaining about how she spends more time in her car than with her own children.

I was getting so frustrated watching this! Why wouldn’t she just catch the bus?

My producer does it every day! She reads the paper and listens to the radio and before she knows it, she’s at work! The first part of her day’s research done. None of this stressing out in peak hour traffic business!

Seriously, I know Sydney’s roads are pretty congested but if that was your life - hours in traffic everyday and you couldn’t avoid it - then why would you live here?

I have to live here. For the job I do, there are probably only five or so positions I could have. And it would be the same in the other capital cities too.

But this woman on the TV last night, probably has something like 500 chances to get out of the rat race!

Why would you stay in this daily nightmare? And that’s what it is. Fancy spending more time in your in your car, than with your own family!

It’s just ludicrous.

What’s the point of living to work, when we really should be working to live!

Well, this is the week to think about it! Because it’s Country Week.

Everyone should go and check it out. All you ever wanted to know about life in the country, how to get a job, and they’ll help you. You can find out about all the different places you could live, from Albury to Armidale, Coffs Harbour to Griffith, Moree to Parkes!

I spent six years in rural NSW. Moree, Parkes and Bendigo and I’ve never lived in such friendly places. Everywhere you go, people are nice and you know everyone too.

Traffic? They don’t even know what the word means! Getting stuck in traffic is having to stop at a red light! Moree and Parkes didn’t have a set of traffic lights when I was there!

So I reckon, unless you’re like me (with limited job opportunities), if what you do here is what you want to do elsewhere, why wouldn’t you nick off?

Nooooooooooooo! For god's sake keep them in the city! There used to be three vehicles a day go up this road, these days it's nearly a dozen and that's just too much traffic noise. I used to be able to drive 70km's without seeing another vehicle 5 years ago, now I could pass 6 or 7 and it simply ruins the driving experience. Please pass on the word that traffic congestion is a reality out here already, stay in town, it's better that way.

I live in Newcastle and it makes me laugh when People get flusted on our roads.. I think we have the best free flowing peak traffic. Where are the jobs in Country NSW and I'll move?
