Westpac slammed over Indian outsourcing push

Westpac is under fire over its decision to outsource dozens of Sydney jobs to India.

The move coincides with confirmation the NAB is also considering outsourcing some of its IT operations.

Rod Mason from the finance sector union says it's dreadful news for both consumers and workers.

“[They’re] losing critical people who provide support to frontline staff,” he said.

“So, for example, if you’re in a branch and need a query responded to on some of your bank account details, branch staff will now need to ring India to get that answer rather than ringing staff here in Australia.”

Westpac slammed over Indian outsourcing push -Don't slam the Banks-they have to keep improving their profitability otherwise their shares will be dumped and their business will suffer. If the Banks suffer ultimately the people will suffer. No the real culprit here is Rudd Labor and its extreme worker friendly industrial policies. He is going to make it a lot more attractive for businesses to export their jobs.

Desmond: Businesses have been moving jobs overseas for many years and Rudd wasn't in Charge then.Telsta for instance If you ring them you get someone in India.Bank closures in Suburbia Rudd wasn't in Charge.Business have the right to look after their shareholders that's why they move offshore not because of anything Rudd has done.Bit of Balance please.

He may not have started the trend but he sure has hell hasn't helped the situation. Scrapping AWAs, bringing back unfair dismissal laws for small business, talk of maternity and paternity leave etc. etc. why wouldn't a Business look elsewhere?. Whether we like it or not we are part of the Global economy.

Somewhat contradictory to Westpacs recent advertising campaign about how they were Australia's first bank etc... Wonder if we will see that advert again?

I think Westpac is in a real situation, I understand there is a lot of trouble behind the scenes not being admited to yet. eg. Westpac has warned that two of their property trusts are in trouble- the Westpac Family Restaurants Trust and the Westpac Family Restaurants Property Trust No.2 - will "face "difficulties" if the restaurants are not sold." However its the real story behind the set up of thse trusts that will eventually get them into trouble - all will be revealed www.loanchecker.com.au

The same thing is happening in IT. Government contracts are going to India via local companies with offices offshore. Minus side, cutting edge, high end jobs are being lost. Plus side, government costs slashed by up to 70% and they can afford more IT infrastructure development which benefits us all. Companies must either offshore or lose the business altogether. We have to adapt: move away from coding and think about more innovative use of software that can be purchased cheaply from abroad.
