Sydneysiders are being urged to ignore an idea from the government to rent out granny flats in a bid to ease the housing shortage.
The idea has backfired, leaving Premier Morris Iemma red faced for suggesting it.
One man who took on the advice has been slugged an $86,000 land tax fine.
Shadow planning Minister Brad Hazzard says the government hasn't changed the laws to allow for the idea to work.
“He’s more interested in getting the spin out as soon as possible rather than fixing the problem.
“Going and building a granny flat as Morris Iemma suggested may actually get us an $86,000 bill…most people would be wiser to stay right away from granny flats until Mr Iemma does change the law.”
