Qantas flight delayed 15 hours

17/08/2008 2:40:00 PM.  |

Qantas has been forced to delay a Sydney-bound flight from London by more than 15 hours because of a problem with the plane's rudder.

The airline today confirmed that flight QF2, scheduled to leave London's Heathrow airport had been grounded following a "technical issue".

It should now arrive in Sydney at 7.30pm tomorrow, after the Boeing 747-400 was originally due to touch down at 5.30am.

Qantas says passengers booked on the flight had been given hotel rooms during the delay.

"It's a technical issue with the rudder ... that will be rectified overnight," said a Qantas spokeswoman.

"Our engineers are looking into it now.

"All passengers have been provided overnight accommodation."

The flight has been rescheduled for later tonight.

The rudder problem is the latest in a string to beset Qantas' fleet since an explosion ripped a hole in the fuselage of a Qantas jet en route from Hong Kong to Melbourne, forcing an emergency landing at Manila, on July 25.

On Friday, the airline confirmed a small access panel had fallen off a jumbo jet as it flew to Singapore from Melbourne.

The problem was discovered during routine checks on the plane after it arrived at Singapore's Changi Airport.

Last Wednesday, a Qantas Boeing 767 experienced a hydraulic failure which affected the plane's steering as it landed at Sydney airport.

The plane left a trail of hydraulic fluid as it touched down on its way from Melbourne, forcing the closure of the runway for 40 minutes while the spill was mopped up.

On August 2, a Qantas Boeing 767 flight turned back for an emergency landing at Sydney airport after a hydraulic fluid leak was discovered.

And a domestic flight was forced to return to Adelaide after a wheel bay door failed to close on July 29.

I just find it hard to believe that people are stupid enough to fly with this airline, they have lost their way. A rudderless aircraft however is rather symbolic for this rudderless airline.

I just say it again - Qantas B747s are maintained in Australia the last time I checked. So perhaps unions should take most of the blames in its incompetent but greedy engineers who demand high wages but don't do the jobs properly.

Wiseacre Ordure, I see that you are still prepared to justify the radical changes made to maintenance by Geoff Dixon. The moving of some maintenance was only part of the problem...

Bolts, perhaps the next headline of the media can be "Qantas is having trouble again as its flight magazine is outdated".

Errrr , Geof aka Mr Dixon, please advise me when I might be safe to travel internationally again, I didnt get a spoon to stir my coffee. I hope you are meeting with the unions to resolve this matter. Thank you for a little light hearted banter Geof and WO. Hendo you put your foot in it with the rudderless aircraft, is that like a RUDDerless Government. Another little slice of interest, 60 mins just aired David Evans, Climate Scientists view on EFT's. I almost fainted, finally the opposing view.

Oh dear slowe, how silly are you, the government has a Rudd Der. It's Qantarse that lacks a rudder. Rudd, The Prime Minister, Rudd Der! Just in case I had mistakenly thought that you were trying to be clever when you got it all backwards. And to Wiseacre Ordure. The problems with Qantas are due to Shareholder focus on profit before safety, off shore, on shore it matters little if enough qualified engineers are given enough time. We seem to have a censor on board who truncated my last post.

For a number of years I've been disolusioned with the service of Qantas both overseas and domestic, including the unfriendly attitude of the cabin staff towards economy passengers, and general cleanliness of aircraft, both left a lot to be desired. Little things do not go unoticed, particularly when you fly with other airlines. These latest problems should be a 'wake up call' ', as Ansett folded because of lack of maintence. Virgin Blue, & Tiger Airways are showing the way. Ross Eastwood
