Nelson stands by plans for budget busting Senate block

19/08/2008 5:23:00 PM.  | John Barrington with AAP

The controversial alcopops tax is in doubt, with the Federal Opposition planning to block the measure in the Senate.

Liberal Leader Brendan Nelson has convened his own forum in Canberra today, speaking with health professionals and young people about binge drinking.

But there has been criticism from Health Minister Nicola Roxon who called the forum "a stunt" after pointing out key supporters of Labor's alcopops tax were not invited.

Dr Nelson has told Luke Bona the forum has been useful, and supports evidence that the 70 per cent tax on pre-mixed drinks will lead to unsafe consumption of hard liquor.

"The ready-to-drinks, or alcopops, have basically shrunk in terms of sales while full bottle spirits are walking out the door."

The Coalition will now develop it's own policy, with plans to limit alcohol in pre-mixed drinks, and ban certain products with high levels of sugar and other stimulants.

Mr Nelson denies the coalition is being obstructionist by threatening to block the alcopop tax, as well as a raft of other key budget measures in the Senate.

The government faces a budget shortfall running into billions of dollars because of opposition plans to block the alcopop tax, an increase in the Medicare levy surcharge threshold and possibly the luxury car tax.

The coalition has also confirmed it will block changes to the commonwealth seniors health card.

Dr Nelson says the government did not announce before the election it was going to increase taxes by $19.5 billion.

Great stuff, Nelsons great policy is to make alcoholic lolly water cheaper for young people. Next he will be wanting them sold is schools and subsidised booze for babies. This is populist policy at it's lowest.

So "old Fossil Henderson" supports young people mixing their own spirit based drinks in whatever alcohol proportions they want (with the odd "spike" thrown in) as opposed to pre-measured controlled drinks? And what's more.....the majority of pre-mixed spirits are drunk by blue collar workers....Bundy & Coke you great twit! Rudd is trying to single handedly stop trademen from drinking!!

The W Radcliffe; Wipe out: Take a 5oz glass, fill with ice cubes. Add 2oz Tequila. Add 2 oz Cointreau. Add 1/8 inch, (3mm) of Soda Water. Squeeze in a thin slice of lemon. Stir and drink with a straw. Caution: 3 is fun, 5 will change your life, and not often in a nice way. Note, the first sip is not so nice, after that it can be hard to stop at three. Now this is a drink, not those sissy Alco Pops. WARNING: Do not drink and drive. (unless your car is faster than a police car.)

Geoff- I don't know why we waste our time with Hendo-the Guys a split brain. Have a look at his two postings. The first one-driven by hatred for all things Liberal-he berates Brendan Nelson for encouraging kids to drink alcoholic lolly water. In the second one he is encouraging kids to drink stronger stuff and drive cars that are faster than the Police cars. Of course he will say that he was only joking-my foot.

Graeme the price it was at before had it at the same rate of tax as any other alcohol. Do some math, the cost of a bottle of vodka and some LOLLI water, is by far cheaper at the prvious costs than buying premixes anyway. So how is this a stunt? Regardless of price their is only 2 ways underaged get it. !.) by parents or friends of legal age. 2.) by shoddy operators who arent asking for ID. . Now why shpuld I have to pay triple its worth because of Idiots supplying or fools trading?

Do you all know what kids here drink? They buy a cask of wine orange juice and red cordial they call it a sunrise or something. Hendo no mention alcopops in fact word is kids love the tax because gives them an excuses to go harder and not be beaten.

Mr Henderson, Populist policy at its lowest is the ALP decision to implement this tax in the pure means of reaching the budget surplus, whilst dressing it up as a shock horror teen binge drinking epidemic, when studies show binge drinking has fallen amongst the young generation since 2001. There was never any intention to reduce binge drinking amongst teens, it is blatantly obvious. I'm disgraced that ALP are willing to sacrifice our youths health purely for the motive of a budget surplus.
