Rudd reluctant to revive nuclear debate

19/08/2008 5:55:00 PM.  |
The Rudd government has come out swinging against coalition suggestions to resurrect the debate on nuclear power, accusing the coalition of not being clear with the Australian people.

The attack came after Liberal frontbencher Ian Macfarlane has released details of a speech he will give in Brisbane tonight, saying if Australia is serious about reducing global greenhouse emissions it cannot ignore the nuclear option.

Ms Climate Change Minister Penny Wong wants Opposition Leader Brendan Nelson to say where exactly he stands in the nuclear debate.

Mr Nelson says we need more rational discussion and a less emotive debate on the issue.

"Unfortunately the Labor party can't even agree to dig uranium out of the ground and sell it to the rest of the world," he told reporters.

"We've had the Labor party and (Prime Minister Kevin) Rudd for some ridiculously stupid reason refusing to sell uranium to India to help its domestic nuclear power industry.

"My view is we will need both sides of politics - that's the Labor, the Liberal and National parties - to jointly support the development of a nuclear power industry.

"We need more rational discussion about nuclear power in Australia and much less of the emotive, political debate we've had in the last few years."

Isnt it time to put it to referendum? That way we can save money on the "reviews" we have to have ! I think this is the way to decide...only with out the propaganda adds from the pollies.

put all the big issues to a referendum, it wont cost us anymore than the spin we get through taxpayer funded ads we are being bombarded with. its used in europe successfully, but we wont rationally debate it here because we are governed by a scare monger. wong wants nelson to say where he stand on this, exactly, i thought he did. put it to a referendum, take the politics out of it and let the people decide.

Did anyone see the 60 minutes article on Sunday night RE: Debate over Climate Change? Well, Mr RUDD was questioned by Tara Brown and everytime she asked a question RUDD circled round the answer with his usual rhetoric and spin. There is no way the RUDD will give the public a direct answer to a direct question....He is a spineless, gutless individual who cannot and will not commit to anything and who will divert round the difficult decisions that need to be made by a Prime Minister.

Richard...I saw it. Pathetic. And Tara was pathetic in not pushing for a straight answer to a straight question. But slowly people are starting to work Rudd out. It won't take too much longer (hopefully!)....

Bolts and Richard, perhaps Tara knew Rudd will never give a direct answer hence she saves her breath. No point wasting time for this kind of politicians.

yeah richard i saw it. i have been reading david evans opposing views for a while now, and was pleasantly surprised when 60 mins actually aired them. i had become resigned to the fact that media wasnt going to air an opposing view from a climate change expert like prof evans. dud rudd didnt answer anything, he bumbled and stumbled around every direct question, his only contribution was the same tired scare mongering spin he is well known for by now. good on 60 mins for putting evans on the show.

I think we have to start and start soon. We have to have a containmaent ceel for the waste but we're getting waste coming back to us now! We can, if smart enough, Refine the yellow cake to fuel rod stage. We are a smart country being bled dry. We should utilise both the top quality ore to its maximum potential as well as the brains in our communities. Yeah the scaries...any one would think tech. will stop advancing and finding newer tech to deal with waste storage issues, listenin to greens etc!

Labor is deliberately misleading the public into thinking that wind and solar energy, both of which are inherently intermittent and unreliable, can replace baseload power that is continuous and reliable. Only three technologies can produce large amounts of baseload power: fossil fuels, hydroelectric plants and nuclear. http://www.nuclearaustralia.com

Guys there is an alternative which will meet the Greens main concerns of WMD's & nuclear waste. Its called called "Thorium". Australia has the largest deposit of Thorium in the world. For your reference "http://thoriumenergy.com.au/FedSubmission6.doc" "http://blog.heritage.org/2008/07/09/thorium-nuclear-reactors-promising/" There are no excuses they are 100% safe and clean. Wake up Australia, Wind, Wave and Solar will not handle base load. And what happens if they get hit by a cyclones?

Emmanuel Carydis-India also has large reserves of Thorium and are quite advanced with their research into its use as a safe Energy source.
