Sleeping in a bin: Police search for mystery street kids

19/08/2008 3:34:00 PM.  | Anil Lambert-Patel
Police are on the hunt for three children, thought to have been sleeping in an industrial bin at Maitland, in NSW’s Hunter Valley.

The shabbily-dressed children had been spotted in the area over the last two weeks, so when staff at a store in the small town found a mattress, blankets and pillows in an industrial bin they called police in to investigate.

Police quickly contacted the local waste company to halt bin collection at the store and have stepped up their calls for public assistance in finding the three youngsters.

The three children are described as being a four-year-old boy with a shaved head, a six-year-old boy with a mullet-style haircut and a nine-year-old girl, whose description has not been confirmed.

Anyone with information about the children or their whereabouts is urged to contact Maitland Police Station on (02) 4934 0200, Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or the Department of Community Services on 132 111.

Children have been found. Apparently they were using it as a cubby house. and the car park as a play ground. DoCs are assessing the welfare of the childrens situation to see if there are any on going concerns. Lets hope the department doesnt let these kids down. its a department that doesnt have enough staff to deal with the huge number of phonecalls they recieve each day. they are so stressed. and with what has happened around here of late, they will be watched this time.

Thnx Bel, it seems this wasnt a BIG enough story to be aired as yet. Relief indeed to hear they're doing ok. One hopes the parents in communities would educate their children about playing bins.....Horrifics pics go through the mind, thinking of what could have gone wrong.

yes imagine the poor fellas that pick up the bins if they had mistakenly picked up a bin with kids in it. They crush the rubbish in the truck. they would have heard screams. It would have affected them for life. Just glad it all turned out ok. thanks nick for your interest

No, he would not have heard the screams. The noise of the truck and the compactor would have stifled any short-lived screams emitted. The drivers over hear sometimes wear ear protectors to muffle the loud sound of the compaction process. They would have found the kids at the dump but only if they were looking for them. Otherwise, they never would have been found.
