Xenophon refuses to rubber stamp FuelWatch

24/08/2008 12:51:00 PM.  |
Australians don't want a rubber stamp senate and the government of the day shouldn't either, incoming independent Senator Nick Xenophon says.

The South Australian senator says having a majority in the upper house contributed to the coalition losing last year's federal election.

"Senates do have a watchdog role, Australians don't want a rubber stamp senate," Senator Xenophon told ABC TV.

"(And) Senates sometimes can save governments from themselves."

Senator Xenophon said the Senate saved the Hawke government from its vastly unpopular Australia Card in the mid-1980s "and I think some in the Liberal Party wish they were saved from WorkChoices with a Senate that could have blocked it".

The coalition enjoyed a one seat majority in the upper house from July 2005 until the end of June this year.

It used its power to ram through a legislative program which included WorkChoices, the sale of Telstra and counter-terrorism measures.

Nationals Senator Barnaby Joyce, who handed the former Howard government its Senate majority by picking up a key fourth seat in Queensland at the 2004 election, agrees the new-look Senate will be a better house of review.

"We got some decisions wrong as the previous government and that's why we're out of government," Senator Joyce told ABC TV.

"I've always believed we should have a more robust Senate."

The upper house - with the Greens, Family First and Senator Xenophon sharing the balance of power - could now get back to what it's supposed to do, Senator Joyce said.

"There should be more discussion in the Senate and people should see Senators using their heads and voting accordingly rather than as directed."

Exactly what the Senate's role was always meant to be. Well done Xenophon, now the tapayers dollars wont be wasted on a "watch" that was never going to acheive anything. Maybe had Meg Lees done her job in the senate, as she promised, the GST might not have been passed either.A robust senate can keep the Govt of the day honest if they represent their constituants. Xenophon seems to be listening to those who put him there. I hope we have more like him in there, serving those who pay them ...US !!

Well Xenophoney, a double dissolution election will give everyone a chance to get rid of the Libs. To see this representative of so few people holding the country to ransom for such inconsequential reasons is a worry. Xenophoney is grandstanding and showing a complete disregard for the budget and for democracy. While south Australia holds the country to ransom on Kiddy Booze tax and Petrol Corp monitoring, we can oppose sending them any more water, let them drink salt water.

Fuel watch was not part of Labor's election platform. Get over it Henderson you silly old fool. Its doomed (and so are you!). It's YOU that raises a "double dissolution", nobody else. The Opposition won't block supply - but they will look carefully at Rudd's cheating and increases in taxation. Henderson, have you noticed how the mood on this blog has changed over recent months? Where have all your champions gone? Reality is coming back. 2010 ain't that far away.

Bolton, Haven't you noticed that the support for Labor has increased since the election. Haven't you noticed that the Libs are in a continuing Leadership Crisis. And Bolts, I have noticed the change on the site, in spite of a continuing dominance of racist right wing pro interest rate increase type Howard and Costello supporter bozos, there has been a steady increase of sane people contributing to the forum and defeating you. Your side has quantity while we have quality. You lost ages ago.

Perhaps Henderson could share tha data that shows "support for Labor has increased since the election". Theyv'e lost a by-election (significantly), almost lost the NT...and even Rudd's popularity ain't where it used to be! There is no "leadership crisis" - only that which is in the minds of (1) The Labor leadership, quivering in their boots and (2) the stupid media that try and beat it up daily. And finally, I can't remember when anyone was "beaten" here..most of us just share our views??

Hendo, 1/7/08 on a two-party preferred basis, Labor slipped four points to 55 per cent, while the coalition lifted to 45 per cent. Result is Labor's lowest level of popularity since its November 24 election victory. 24/8/08 support for Rudd's ability to handle the environment has fallen from 74 per cent at the beginning of March - to 67 per cent. Newspoll 24 August Rudd fallen from peak of popularity, with an increasing number of voters since the election seeing him as out out of touch, arrogant

Hendo, but it doesn't show that Rudd's popularity is (as you assert so stupidly) has increased. Clinging at straws my ideolistic left winged anarchistic moronic friend! Live News will probably not release this because they seem to like your one-sided, Rudd supportive view of life. Please try to keep up WITH REALITY.

Oh Gareth, You say the fact that Rudd's Government would be re-elected with an increased majority doesn't show his popularity. Ha ha ha...

Hendo, that Benson never gives up .He gets knocked down every day but comes back for more.I have been busy sorting out that bare faced liar from Gippsland.Still been reading your posts.Youve got them covered as usual.Do these dopes{CL excluded} really think the Liberals are going well.Wonder when Bolts thinks it'll be a good time to change leader.Maybe when Kevvie calls a "double".How politically naive are these people.I wish I knew where they lived so I could sell each one the Harbour bridge.

Graeme Freestone..where does your data show that Rudd's popularity has increased? Here's a fact for you...Union membership decreased significantly under the Howard government, but you never acknowledge it. You seem to freely mis-interpret anything and everything. Unions, and you are becoming increasingly irrelevant. And, we're all getting used to it!
