Sheens unfazed by Benji rugby rumours

26/08/2008 3:25:00 PM.  | AAP
Wests Tigers coach Tim Sheens is unconcerned about growing speculation Benji Marshall could be the latest high-profile NRL player to make a switch to rugby union.

The star Tigers playmaker has been the subject of rumours he could be considering joining the likes of Sonny Bill Williams, Craig Gower and Mark Gasnier in jumping codes.

But Sheens said today he was not worried about the speculation surrounding Marshall, who is contracted to the Tigers until the end of next season.

"What he decides to do at the end of next season is up to him," Sheens said today.

"At the moment, he's not talking about doing anything next year, we're counting on him playing for us next year."

Sheens said rumours about Marshall's future were not unexpected given the Kiwi star's stature.

"Most players adopt the attitude of - the manager tests the water at other clubs, in Super League in England and rugby seems to be the latest one," he said.

"That's been going on for years.

"That's the manager's role and they'll tell you they just want to do the best by their client.

"What Benji will be doing in twelve months time is hard to say, I'd like to think he'll be with us but I'm not getting concerned with that.

"I don't think it's concerning him either, that's the most important thing, it's not interfering with his preparation."

The Tigers remain a slim mathematical chance of making the finals but must beat Cronulla and Gold Coast to have any hope.
