Teacher resigns over gay site pictures

26/08/2008 6:00:00 PM.  | Richard Maxton
A senior teacher at an exclusive private school on Sydney's northern beaches has resigned after students found his profile on a gay dating website.

The teacher, who had taught at Pittwater House High School for 15 years, was giving a presentation to year 11 students when they saw him type in a strange word as his username to access an educational website.

Several students later Googled the strange word and found it to be the teacher's profile name for a gay dating website.

In the explicit personal profile the teacher described himself as a "40-year-old cuddly bear who is looking for (a) **** buddy/friend for fun."

The profile also contained a description of his genitals and sexual fetishes as well as several naked pictures.

While his face was not visible in the pictures, he was identified by several other distinguishing features.

It is understood the students circulated the pictures around the school after accessing them.

The schools princpal, Richard Morgan, said the teacher had admitted responsibility for the images after they came to the attention of a staff member. He resigned yesterday morning.

"The teacher in question has resigned. Our investigation found that he had crossed the line of his personal life with school life," Mr Morgan said.

"There are not any child protection matters involved. He has not done anything illegal. In fact, we would not have even been aware had it not been stumbled across."

This is a disgraceful story and more proof that the internet is ruining our public lives. Here is a guy that is openly gay and looking for Mr Right and a bunch of nosey school kids have cost him his job and primary source of income.

Unfortunate? mabey. Still it's one more reason to keep work and home seperate. Gay or straight it's not a good look. I question what has happened to the students who ruined this mans life. Right or wrong it was bad form. I guess its true "Money, good people does not make."

Ish we are all aware surely, how the youth of today are very intelligent with regard to the internet. Why would a teacher, or any professional who works with children, put this most intimate detailed profile out there in cyber space?I am an oldie and even I know once you press "enter" on private details, it is out there for all to see.He made an educated adult choice to do this, then somehow, allowed children to see him use his net name at school. Dont blame the children, it is HIS responsibility!

Susan you have got to be kidding me! So just because he is a teacher, he has to live a secluded life where he can't have a good time. This bloke has put a picture of himself nude on the interent, hoping to attract Mr Right. He's done nothing wrong. He's just looking for love and these little brats have taken advantage of this. I'll ask you, do you have a facebook page?

Yes Susan the youth of today are very intelligent with regard to the internet. You claim to be an 'oldie', then you come from an era of respect, you speek of it in other posts. How then do you not see the complete lack of it this case. your logic dictates that if your a teacher you cant have a life. Also it's your fault if i see your credit card # and rip you off. There's a difference between a chat room and a classroom. Knowing somthing doesnt mean you should spread it around

I don't agree with Ish or Philip. Now a good 12yrs ago when i was in High School, kids would have still done anything to embarrass a teacher. That's what kids are like and have been in the past 20yrs or so at least. Kids will always be kids. I believe it's entirely the teachers fault. Yeah fine, have a life outside. But if you're stupid enough to put nude pictures of yourself out in the public, EXPECT them to get into the wrong persons hand! Honestly, i CANNOT believe this guy's stupidity!

I disagree with Susan Lawe, it IS most definately at least partly the childrens fault. While I'll admit it was a bad idea for the teacher to use the same username for his work and private life it was immature and completely lacking in respect for the students to do what they did. I'm 27 and back in school we never did anything like this. IMHO it shows simply that parents need to get of their arse and kick their little darlings into shape. Teach them some basic respect for others.

Ish and Phillip, I dont think I said anywhere that what has happened is right or that he should have no private life. More to the point I was trying to highlight the foolishness of this man, a teacher. My daughter is a teacher and has to contend with students recording her on their mobile phones in class. We are all entitled ot our privacy, but the fact is the internet is not private, and he somehow let them see his username.I feel for the teacher, but my point was, discretion around children.

Again I will post, no where did i say it was right, more that my post spoke to the foolishness of the teacher.John the gen gap is as short as yours to the gen behind you. No you didnt do anything like this, but those behind you now, do. Teachers are even recorded on mobile phones while in class. Surely this teacher was foolish allowing a student to see him enter his username. Guess what , yr 11 students are immature, and when was the last time you heard of a parent having the guts to dicipline.

I think it better to live a recluse than to live a life of abandon. I think kids deserve a better example. Kids deserve to have their honest questions meet honest answers. One cannot live a virtuous life and search for f**k buddies.

No worries. This bloke could walk into another job with the current Federal Government tomorrow. Right now the new Governer General is hiring his type for immediate starts.

It is really quite sad for both the school and the teacher . My daughter went to this school . He was an excellent teacher, hard working, very well liked and thought to be gay . However it is really very indiscreet for teacher to post naked photos of himself on the internet and once exposed he and the school had very little choice in what to do about it. He has of course done nothing illegal and hopefully can quickly find reemployment at another school.

This guy knows he made a fatal error, thats why he resigned. Susan I have the guts to discipline, my boy is 18 and would not disrespect his teachers like this. anyway shouldnt parents be checking what their kids are accessing on the internet? havent a lockout system 15 yr olds still shouldnt be able to access sites like this. its a big lesson for everyone to learn. becareful what you put on the internet. put in your own name and see what comes up. you may be surprised.

It was really silly posting naked pictures of himself online. But I am torn - teachers are in positions of power & respect & should be beyond reproach & should set an example. But then I also believe that his private life is his business & if he wants to do that, that who are we to tell him he can't just becasue he's a teacher. I'd have no problem with him teaching my kids. And if my kids passed these pictures around - I'd class them as bullies & punish accordingly!

The teacher was certainly wrong and used poor judgment. But nobody is perfect. He is not a child molester, therefore he shouldn't lose his job. Unfortunately,as the Malinkes of Mali say,"If you hide your s*** at the botton of the river, it will eventually come to the surface." http://guyblaise.com/ USA

In answer to your question Ish, wouldnt matter if I did have facebook, myspace, whatever...NONE of my private details would be posted there. The internet is open to all kinds of perverted people, who in their right mind would post their most private information on any of these sites ? Also from what I have heard reported the pics were of a more explicit type than simply being naked. Using the same username for his professional work as he used for his private life, was dumb. Discretion is wiser.

It's not about what's right or wrong. Firstly, this report only shows us that gays are still not welcomed in ausie. Second thing is that children nowadays have no respect for their teacher. Third thing is that personal life and working life can't be mixed. This world is not perfect. You can't really change this world the way you want it to be, you just simply adapt to the way this world works.

Andy - you are absolutley wrong on this - this is not a gay issue. We also had a female teacher who posed naked with her husband in a photoshoot for a magazine...she was SACKED from the school she was teaching at. The issue is public nakedness from teachers. Re the disrepect - on that we agree...I'd be furious if it were my children handing around these photos.
