The Sharks have continued to distance themselves from Greg Bird, pulling his player profile down off their official website.

Bird has reportedly played his last game with the Cronulla Sharks, with the club set to sack him after sponsors reeled over the star player’s assault charge.

Bird has been accused of maliciously inflicting grievous bodily harm after his girlfriend was allegedly glassed in the face, leaving her with cuts and a fractured eye socket.

He has been stood down immediately by the Sharks, but the club now says it could sack the player altogether, regardless of the result of court proceedings in October.

The link to Bird's profile is already a glaring omission on the site.

Community and sponsorship concerns are putting pressure on the club to act, according to chief executive Tony Zappia.

"It is a very difficult decision based on Cronulla being such a close-knit community," he told News Limited.

"It (terminating Bird’s contract) is certainly something that will be strongly considered."

Club sponsors have contacted the club, enquiring on their plans for Bird.

"They are pretty keen to see some action is taken," Zappia said.

"The club has a responsibility to sponsors, supporters, management staff and the players.

"It is important that the values of society are upheld at every opportunity."

Yeah, John McEnroe and John Daley are perfect role models.

What kind of example or role model are these high profile footy players sending out? IF found guilty, he should be made an example of, by getting the maximum prison penalty. And he allegedly dobbed in his mate for the crime (who was playing golf at the time)

The NRL should introduce a minium educational standard for their players - a minimum IQ of double figures or for the dummies more than the number of fingers and toes that you have!!

It is far overdue that a strong signal be sent to these brain dead arrogant oafs. He should be sacked and if found guilty of GBH sent to prison for the maximum allowable term. Maybe then, just maybe, other over aggressive low I.Q. football thugs may get the message and behave off the field in a manner acceptable to society.

Again a contract gets torn up? What is wrong with utilising this idiot in some other way.Eg. He could be used in shelters ot do Community work, work with the disabled or trauma victims? There are so many avenues open to the club to make this Idiot wake up. I have no prob, with him being sacked but this highlights the FOLLY of GALLOP and his Sanctity of contract he was moaning about. PULL him from the game and make him see life on the other side. Cut his pay back in accordance but get him learnin

Sometimes I wonder if any of today's NRL players have learned a thing or two (or more, if anything) about common sense.

I hope this man gets sent to Long Bay... Typical footballer though, a few beers and their heads grow along with their ego's. What is most repulsive is that he didn't have the courage to stand trial for his convictions and requested a mate to take the fall. If that was my sister he wouldn't make it to Court.

Not a typical footballer at all. This is a case of an individual who is alleged to have committed a serious offence who happens to play football. There are thousands of footballers in all codes of football who do the right thing all the time, so they all shouldn't be tarred with the same brush. Of course there have been other incidents involving footballers, but ratio wise this type of thing doesn't happen any more often with footballers than what it does with the rest of the community. It is only because of how it is reported on that makes it seem that way.

The premise that a person is innocent until proven guilty seems to have seems to have taken a holiday. That Cronulla has stood Bird down pending the court case is fine, there have been many precedents for this. And if he is guilty then throw the book at him, he would deserve the full 25 year sentence. If he is innocent, what happens. The club appears to be saying that he is finished with Cronulla regardless of the outcome. If this is the case then what about the sanctity of the contract.

Can the police explain how Greg Bird was allowed to make so many phone and text messages while he was in their custody. He must have been a suspect and as such he was only entitled to one phone call to his lawyer. On the front of the paper he is making calls as he arrives at the police station. He appears to have been organising an alibi while in police custody? Is this another example of there being one law for footie and movie stars and another one for the rest of us.

G Mayberry how smart are you. Why dont you tar them all with the same brush, if you actually lived in the real world you would know that this is just a reflection af society as a whole. Why dont you crawl back in the corner and contemplate your navel!

Alcohol is the real problem here. I am sure that it was Alcohol that turned Dr Jekyll into Mr Hyde. Until governments set out to tackle the alcohol industry in the same way they are starting to tackle the nicotine industry these problems won't go away. Start by getting rid of the Kiddy Booze Alco Pops, Tax them out of existence, then Double the Tax on Booze across the board. Then introduce a system where people who get into trouble with booze are denied all access to it for good.

David, if its drugs involved it will come out too, but they are drug tested regularly. the guy obviously has a grog problem and anger issues. And Andy what does your comment mean? only stupid thing she did was hook up with him in the first place. it is in no way her fault this happened. he obviously threatened her still to get her to say it was the flat mate who did it. what a scum********** he is

Graeme made a comment about alcohol...how does he know? Is that such a bad question? People are on here making accusations...I am asking how they know? Not so bad really is it? Or am I required to just make assumptions then write whatever I want? There is no tone, just a simple question asking why he would make such an assumtion without ANY factual information.

Educated, uneducated, drugs, alcohol, rich, poor or otherwise, woman beaters come from all sections of society, always have. We need more decent real men, to denounce these out of control cowards among their peers, then we might get somewhere. Fathers need to step up and show their sons good role models, from day one. Teach their sons to respect women, through the way they treat their Mothers, and wives. No matter what a woman does, no man has the right to lay hands on her in a violent manner.

Isn't it believed that kids Emulate the Parent? My experience with my Kids shows they're little mirrors, in that you get back what you put in front of them. Perhaps this clowns father thought it good to beat/mistreat his wife. Sad. Susan, I teach my kids to respect ALL others, it isnt right to hit anyone, Any Idiot can be a bully. This lad would be a Strong man for sure, just so horribly gutless. It is harder to walk away than to react with violence in any situation,if your a violent person.

Fergus, you obviously didnt read the news item yesterday about the man who received 2 life sentences for murdering his partner. He was indigineous , but of course responding to a comment like yours, by a "whitey" like me, will bring out those who love to see racism as only a white problem. You need to travel some fergus, learn something, your backyard has made you to close minded and one eyed. Dare I even say, racist. Woman beaters come in all races of men. Every one a coward.

All hail Susan Lawe!!! Action starts at home! "no training no gaining" isn't that their code? He's a thug! Like the rest of them when they get a few beers in them.. There's a culture amounst footballers from all codes. When they don't get their way, they get the shit's and wanna bash everyone cause they are so paranoid of being taken off their high horse that they are supose to be ridding ever so high in the sky! GROW UP the lot of you they are just young kids with to much money...

The 'culture' among football players is nothing varying from that of say a Bricky. The traditonal thing to do when a slab for a house is laid is to open a box of been and all drink it. What is different from that of a football player? Nothing. We in Australia have a 'culture' of drinking alcohol. The only difference is that NRL and AFL players are under the microscope. Should we all think of them as 'thugs' because they do what everyone else in this country does? You are anonymous, they arent.

Disco, I dont give a ratss arse if he is a footballer or if he drinks, many aussie's drink, they dont all beat on women. Footballer, bricky, bank manager, lawyer, accountant, women beaters come from everywhere, you need to grow up . Domestic Violence effects 1 in 4 homes in Australia, predominantly male violence against women and children. You saying they are all footballers ? Who cares if they have to much money, or dont, they are woman beaters...cowards...every one of them.
