Sydney police are scouring the area outside a Newtown bank for clues after a brazen armed robbery.

Police converged on the Bank of Queensland on the corner of King and Georgina streets in Newtown after reports of shots being fired about 3pm (AEST) today.

Inside a number of bullet holes are visible, blown into a wooden door in the middle of the attempted armed robbery.

The three offenders fled the scene empty-handed before police arrived.

The gunmen entered the bank at around 3pm, demanding cash. The three terrified workers inside rushed into a secure room in the back of the bank.

A witness has told LIVENEWS.com.au he heard shots fired at the scene (audio attached).

"I was walking into the convenience store next to the bank and I thought a truck was making a weird noise - it turns out it was a gun," he said.

"Five minutes later there were cops everywhere in front of the bank. Now they've blocked King St off."

King Street, normally busy, was closed to traffic for the better part of an hour as detectives and SWAT police combed the area.

One lane of King Street has been reopened, but traffic disruptions are expected for several hours.

I happened to be in the area at the time, and witnessed a chain of events that appear to somewhat contradict parts of this article. I stopped nearby at approximately 3:15pm, to see 5 or 6 police cars (including 1 police command vehicle) parked outside the bank, with the street and footpath blocked off for about 20-25 metres in each direction. Crowds had gathered at both edges of the blocked off area. There were approx. 15-20 police officers all grouped around the entrance, 2 of the officers...

…had pistols drawn pointing into the entrance of the bank. I could not see into the bank myself. I could however, see that no officers were entering the bank, and likewise no one was exiting. Over the next 15 minutes, various police vehicles continued to arrive, including 3 or 4 un-marked cars, 3 S.W.A.T. team vehicles, 1 S.W.A.T. truck, 1 police rescue truck, and also 2 ambulances. At about 3:35pm the street and footpath barrier was extended. After this a S.W.A.T. armoured vehicle...

…. S.W.A.T. teams proceeded to arm themselves with what looked like sub-machine guns, and grouped outside the entrance of the bank. Again, no one entered the bank. To me, this looked to be a hostage situation, rather than police “combing the area”.
