Sentimental Menzies pushes Watmough into No.6

28/08/2008 7:00:00 AM.  | Dominic Brock
Manly back-rower Anthony Watmough has been named to start at five-eighth against the Titans on Monday – but only so Steve Menzies can wear his trademark No.11 jersey in his final premiership game at his beloved Brookvale.

Menzies – who is set for the UK Super League next season – wore the 11 on his back for the much of his career since his debut in 1993.

In recent weeks he has been switched to pivot to cover from Jamie Lyon, and while he will play a similar role against the Titans he will do so back in the 11.

"It was the jumper I wore when I first came into first grade 16 seasons ago," Menzies told News Limited.

"That number will always be close to my heart.

"When I played in the second-row I had some greats years in a great Manly side, particularly playing near Cliffy Lyons. I played about 12 seasons in the eleven jumper.

"I just thought it would be nice to play in the number 11 again for my final premiership match at Brookie.

"I hope a big crowd turns up to see the match and hopefully a win which would push us one step closer to the minor premiership."

It will be Menzies’ final game at Brookvale in the regular season, although the second-placed Sea Eagles will play at home again in the first week of the finals after being assured of a top-four finish.
