Bob Katter backs govt's plans to limit Coles/Woolies domination

Outspoken federal MP Bob Katter has welcomed plans to introduce laws aimed at preventing major grocery retailers from swallowing up independent operators.

The federal government is considering introducing creeping acquisitions law following an Australian Competition and Consumer Commission inquiry into grocery prices.

The commission has said individual acquisitions that did not raise competition concerns at the time "may have a significant competitive impact" when taken together.

The government has released a discussion paper that includes the option of adding a new prohibition under the Trade Practices Act to stymie any single purchase by a company "that already has a substantial degree of market power".

Mr Katter, who has been campaigning against the power of supermarket giants Coles and Woolworths, on Tuesday described the government move as a breakthrough.

"On a scale of one to 10, this comes in a two but let's thank the good Lord for two," the independent federal member for Kennedy told reporters.

"Any restraint of Woolworths and Coles has to be for the benefit of both the supply chain, the farmers, and the consumers."

I'm sick to death of hearing AND reading that "the government has a plan", "the government has released a paper" "the discussion paper includes an OPTION", because all it means is "the government" will do what it usually does. BUGGER ALL. Bob Katter I really like your optimism and I think if anyone can achieve something you could, but don't hold your breath waiting for this useless lot to do ANYTHING constructive. All they're full of, besides B S is plans and options and dopey ideas.

Spot-on colleen, you are absolutely right, and the silly buggers that voted for them are only just now starting to realise this. Spot-on also to Bob Katter. I would like to see him come here to Mission Beach (part of his electorate) and observe how the friendly and competent local business people have suffered so badly in the short 8 weeks or so since an unwanted Woolworth's opened here. If the present government is a "small business government" I have yet to see any proof in Kruddland.

You right whingers really need to adjust to your minority status, until your party finds a viable leader you are never going to be re elected, and after the lies and human rights abuses of the Howard Nazi era it's going to be a long time even then. Until you can show that you have left the racism and xenophobia in the past Labor just has to exist to beat you.

Once again HENDERSON raises the Liberal leadership. He (and all on the left) are obsessed with it. And then they turn round and blame the Liberals for raising the matter. Henderson, get a life. We're busy planning for 2010...hope you're ready!

Katter says "On a scale of one to 10, this comes in a two". Looks like mediocrity is alive and well in Ruddtown!

Can't you recognise the difference between a "whinge" and a comment? It's like the difference between "obfuscating" and real action. You are probably sophisticated rather than esoteric and may have to look up the real meanings of these big words, including sophisticated, which you like most, probably misuse.

Has anyone noticed there are fewer and fewer defending the fencepost turtle PM ? Only seeing the same one, with his many names and identical rhetoric now. He must be having a busy time, being sure to get his comments on all issues, has to have the token gesture on all things political. His support is getting thin on the ground now LOL. Batten down there Graeme, your under attack. Maybe you need to create some more nicnames, make it look like Mr Rudd has more support than he has.

Dennis B. Mission beach will be ruined forever once the big developers come into the place and start their caper. Sad to hear about the woolies invasion. No doubt the council of the day crowed loud about the "employment" it would bring. How demented is ther big bussiness world that when they see a place so pristine they feel obligated to come in and screw it all up?

What we need is legislation limiting any one grocery chain to say 25% of the market (like in USA). That will overnight wipe away this disgusting duopoly and add some real competition into the grocery market. That's what is needed - but that takes actual action from a government - any government - and as such there's no chance of it happening. And we're left with grocery bills much higher than they need be - and with farmers being driven into the dirt with pitifully low prices for their produce. Coles and Woolworths can not self-regulate. That is why we have governments!

Henderson, I haven't seen you lately. I had hoped you had gone away or your computer had crashed. Unfortunately, I see you are still here spewing your bile over the internet. You are not relevant. You are not entertaining and you are certainly NOT smart. You continue to show everyone that you have the intelligence of a blow-up doll. I have never seen such a twisted and confused person as yourself. And on Woolies/Coles, Their expansion will stop when they have 100% of the market - not before!!!
